Schlage L9050P 06B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9050 fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
That is exactly what the L9050 is built around. The lock is specified for 1-3/4 inch door thickness, which is the standard commercial door, with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a mortise case measuring 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches. If your doors are thicker or thinner, the trim you pick matters: the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch. Wrought rose trim (A or B) is the standard look.
2) How does the Schlage L9050 Entrance/Office function actually work day to day?
Both levers retract the latchbolt until someone locks the outside lever, either with a key from outside or the thumbturn on the inside. Once locked, the outside lever is dead and entry is by key only; the inside lever still retracts the latch every time, so egress is never blocked. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. In practice this is the office door lock: staff flip the thumbturn when they leave, the door stays keyed until someone unlocks it again. It is a non-deadbolt function, so there is no separate bolt to throw.
3) Is the Schlage L9050 handed, and do I have to specify left or right?
Handed. You need to know the hand of the opening before you order, because the lever and the lock case are set up for a specific swing. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your left and it swings away from you it is left hand, hinges right and swinging away is right hand; a door that pulls toward you is the reverse of that. Get it wrong and the lever will point the wrong way on the door.
4) What cylinder options can I order on a Schlage L9050 mortise lock?
Seven cylinder choices cover conventional and interchangeable core shops. Standard is P, a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway. For small format IC there is B (SFIC less core, no prep restriction) and H (7-pin SFIC prep supplied with a construction core). For Schlage full size IC there is J (less core), R (with core in the S123 keyway) and T (with a construction core for the build phase). L is less conventional cylinder if you are supplying your own. Keying is ordered separately as keyed different or keyed alike.
5) Can I get multiple Schlage L9050 locks keyed alike on one key?
Yes, and that is the usual call for a suite of offices or a small commercial building. Keying is a required selection: keyed different is the default, keyed alike puts every lock on the order on one key, and there is a less-cylinder route if your locksmith is pinning to an existing system. If you already run a masterkey system or a specific keyway, put the details in the special keying field on the order rather than assuming the standard C keyway conventional cylinder will match.
6) Will the Schlage L9050 work into my existing ANSI mortise strike and frame prep?
The lock ships with a 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches, square corner with a 1-3/16 inch lip and a box behind it. Armor front is 1-1/4 by 8 inches. If your frame is already cut for a standard ANSI square-corner mortise strike of those dimensions and the door carries a 2-3/4 inch backset mortise pocket, this drops in. Radius-corner frames or a different lip length need the strike swapped, not the lock.
7) Is the Schlage L9050 approved for a fire rated door?
The latch is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and the L9000 series is UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how the inspector verifies it on site. It is ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000 certified, Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, and it meets ADA requirements. Note the grade shift with interchangeable cores: FSIC drops security to Grade 2, SFIC to Grade 3, while operational stays Grade 1.
8) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage L9050 entrance/office mortise lock from another manufacturer?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is the nearest match: it is a heavy duty Grade 1 mortise lockset with an Entrance/Office function and a 1-3/4 inch door thickness, the same function and grade the L9050 carries. Both use an auxiliary deadlatch arrangement, and the L9050's Entrance/Office function locks the outside lever by key or thumbturn while the inside lever stays free. Confirm lever design and finish separately, since the L9050 is ordered with the 06 lever.
9) What mortise lock should I use if the room needs to stay locked at all times instead of office function?
Use a storeroom function instead. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series with an Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option for 1-3/4 inch doors. Storeroom keeps the outside lever locked continuously with key entry only, where the L9050 Entrance/Office function lets the outside lever be left unlocked by thumbturn.
10) What is the equivalent mortise lock for a classroom door rather than an office door?
For classroom function, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset in the ML2000 Series for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, also 1-3/4 inch. Both share the Grade 1 rating and door thickness of the L9050 but lock and unlock the outside lever by key only rather than with an inside thumbturn.
11) What lock do I use on an aluminum storefront or glass door instead of a Schlage L9050?
The Kaba Ilco BR Series is a glass door bottom rail lock, and the Alarm Lock DL1300NW is a Trilogy Networx wireless electronic mortise lock with keypad made for Adams Rite deadlatches. The L9050 needs a 1-3/4 inch door and a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch case pocket with a 2-3/4 inch backset, which a narrow aluminum stile will not accept.
12) What ANSI function code is the Schlage L9050, and how is it different from a storeroom lock?
F04 is the code, the entrance/office function. The difference from a storeroom lock is who controls it: F04 lets the occupant lock and unlock the outside lever with a thumbturn, so the door can be left on free passage during business hours. A storeroom function has no thumbturn, the outside lever is always locked, and entry is always by key. If you want the always-locked behaviour instead, look at a storeroom function mortise lock such as the Cal-Royal NM8080 or the Accentra 8805FL, both Grade 1.
13) What else could I buy instead of the Schlage L9050 for an office door?
For the same entrance/office function in a Grade 1 mortise lock, the Cal-Royal NM8050 is the direct alternative, rated for 1-3/4 inch doors with an auxiliary deadlatch. If the door does not need to be keyed at all, the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office function mortise lock with lever and escutcheon, non-keyed, on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors. Where the room is a classroom rather than an office, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is the Grade 1 classroom mortise for 1-3/4 inch doors.
14) Can I match the Schlage L9050 levers to the exit devices and other locks in my building?
All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so a corridor on panic hardware and an office on a mortise lock can carry the same lever design. The 06 lever here comes in twelve finishes, from 605 bright brass and 626 satin chrome through 622 matte black and 630 satin stainless, with A or B wrought rose or L and N escutcheon trim. For a fleet of doors, pick the lever design, rose and finish once and repeat it across functions.
15) Is a mortise lock like the Schlage L9050 the right choice, or should I use a cylindrical lock?
A mortise lock needs a pocket cut into the door edge, in this case for a case 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch on a 2-3/4 inch backset, so it is the choice when the door is already prepped for mortise or you are specifying new heavy duty commercial openings. What you get for that prep is a heavy duty Grade 1 lock in cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, a thumbturn on the inside, and the option of a keyed cylinder in the lever above it. If the door is bored for a cylindrical lock, retrofitting to mortise means a new door or a mortise kit, not a swap.
16) Does the Schlage L9050 have a deadbolt?
No deadbolt. The L9050 is a non-deadbolt entrance/office function: security comes from the latchbolt plus the auxiliary latch that deadlocks it once the door closes. If the opening needs a throw bolt, that is a different function in the L Series, or a separate mortise deadbolt such as the Sargent 4874 double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset.
17) Is the Schlage L9050 an electronic lock or does it take a card reader?
Strictly mechanical. There is no reader, keypad or wiring in the L9050; it is key and thumbturn only. If you need credentials or audit on the same kind of door, the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3-hour fire rating, and the Schlage CO-100 is a Grade 1 standalone keypad mortise lock for 1-3/4 inch doors. TownSteel's FME-2000 is a Grade 1 RFID mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors if you want another brand.
18) Does the Schlage L9050 meet Buy American requirements for a government job?
The L9000 series meets the Buy American Act, and it also carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings if the work is in a high velocity hurricane zone. On the code side it is ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1, ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 and UL listed, meets ADA, and complies with the California Referenced Standards Code where the lever return to door is 1/2 inch (64 mm) or less.
19) I do not need a keyed lock on this door - what is the simpler mortise option?
For a non-keyed opening, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon that is non-keyed, with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch door thickness range. The L9050 is a keyed single cylinder lock with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, so if no key is wanted the non-keyed bodies remove the cylinder and keying decisions entirely.
20) What mortise lock replaces a Schlage L9050 on a restroom or bedroom door?
Use a privacy function instead. The Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, matching the L9050's 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors. Privacy locks are operated from the inside without a key, where the L9050 is a keyed single cylinder lock.
21) What is the difference between the Schlage L9050 and the Sargent 7925?
The Sargent 7925 is a heavy duty Grade 1 mortise lock in the 7900 Series with a dormitory exit function, rose trim, and a single cylinder deadbolt. The L9050 is an Entrance/Office function with no deadbolt in the case; its latchbolt is deadlocked by an auxiliary latch when the door closes. Both are Grade 1 heavy duty mortise locks, so the decision is whether the opening needs a throwable deadbolt or a latchbolt-only office function.
22) Can I use a Sargent 4874 mortise deadbolt instead of a Schlage L9050?
No, they are not interchangeable. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt in the 4870 Series with a 2-3/4 inch backset - a bolt only, with no lever and no latch. The L9050 is a lever-operated mortise lockset whose latchbolt retracts by lever from either side unless the outside lever is locked. The 4874 shares the 2-3/4 inch backset but would need separate trim to operate the door.
23) What should I use if I want keypad or credential access on the door instead of a key?
For electronic access on a mortise prep, the Schlage CO-100 is a Grade 1 heavy duty standalone electronic mortise lock with a keypad reader for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lockset with RFID technology, also 1-3/4 inch. Both match the L9050's 1-3/4 inch door thickness and Grade 1 rating, but the L9050 is a non-electronic lock operated by key and thumbturn.
24) Is the Baldwin 6301 mortise lock a substitute for a Schlage L9050?
Not without changing the door prep. The Baldwin 6301 is an Entry/Apartment mortise lock body with a 2-1/2 inch backset, offered knob by knob and, as the 6301LS, lever by lever, for doors 1-3/4 inch and over. The L9050 has a 2-3/4 inch backset, so the cylinder and spindle centerlines land in different places on the door. Function also differs: 6301 is Entry/Apartment where the L9050 is Entrance/Office.
25) What is a comparable mortise lock body if the door needs to be field reversible for handing?
The BEST 45H Series is a heavy duty mortise lock body with public entrance function and field reversible operation, and the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise lock with field reversible operation. The L9050 is ordered handed, so the hand has to be specified at the time of the order rather than set in the field.
26) For a behavioral health or ligature resistant opening, what mortise lock is used instead?
The TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in stainless steel with a passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim. Both are passage function, so they do not key the opening; the L9050 is a keyed single cylinder Entrance/Office lock with a standard 06 lever.
27) Can a Marks USA 21AC or 22AC mortise lock go where a Schlage L9050 goes?
No. The Marks USA 21AC and 22AC are entrance double cylinder ornamental iron mortise locks with round knobs, built for a 1 inch door thickness. The L9050 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door and is a single cylinder keyed lock with an 06 lever. The narrow ornamental iron cases suit storefront and gate stiles rather than a standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door.
28) What mortise lock should I specify when the opening needs electric locking and unlocking from an access control panel?
The Command Access ML190 Series is a heavy-duty motorized mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU operation and 24VDC power in a storeroom function, and the BEST 45HW Series is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock with 12V/24V operation. The L9050 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock, so a wired body is what carries the panel connection.
29) Is the Codelocks CL2255 an alternative to a Schlage L9050 for an office door?
It is a lighter-duty choice. The Codelocks CL2255 is a medium duty electronic tubular mortise latch in the CL2000 Series with a brushed steel finish. The L9050 is a heavy duty Grade 1 mortise lock with a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch case. On a high-traffic commercial office door, the duty rating is the deciding difference.
30) What is the difference between the Schlage L9050 and the Schlage Electronics LE Series mortise locks?
The Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED offering privacy, office, and apartment functions, rated for a 3 hour fire door on 1-3/4 inch doors. The LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and Greenwich trim, right hand, also 3 hour fire rated. The L9050 is a Grade 1 mechanical lock, keyed with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder and no credential reader.
31) What mortise lock has an intruder or lockdown function if the Schlage L9050 does not?
The BEST 45HCA Series is a heavy duty mortise lockbody with an intruder function, and the TownSteel FME-4000 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty electronic intruder classroom mortise lockset with RFID technology for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both allow lockdown at the opening. The L9050 is an Entrance/Office function that locks the outside lever by key or inside thumbturn with the inside lever always free for immediate egress.
32) What is a comparable Grade 1 mortise lock that takes a card or pushbutton credential without wiring the door?
The Dormakaba E-Plex E5086 is a Grade 1 back to back electronic pushbutton and card mortise lock with an entry/egress function in the E-Plex 5X86 Series, and the Accentra NTM623-NR is a Grade 1 nexTouch Generation 3 mortise lock with a capacitive touchscreen keypad, no deadbolt, with cylinder override. Both share the Grade 1 rating with the L9050; the L9050 itself is keyed only, with no keypad or reader.
33) Is the Dormakaba Saffire LX-I-M002 an equivalent to the Schlage L9050?
They differ on rating and credential. The Dormakaba LX-I-M002 Saffire is an electronic RFID mortise lockset with BLE mobile access, rated BHMA Grade 2. The L9050 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mechanical mortise lock keyed with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. On a specification calling for Grade 1, the Saffire's Grade 2 rating is the point to check.
34) Can a Schlage L9050 be upgraded to a high security key system?
Yes. A UL437 listed locking cylinder is an option on the L9000 series, specified as a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder. To go that route, order the lock less cylinder (option L) or with the FSIC less core (option J) and fit the high security cylinder, rather than taking the standard conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder and replacing it later.
35) Will the Schlage L9050 hold up on a high traffic entrance door?
It is a heavy duty commercial lock, Grade 1 for both operation and security under ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000, with a cold rolled steel case finished in zinc dichromate plating. A security blocking hub stops picking by pulling the levers off. For a main entrance or a corridor that cycles all day, Grade 1 is the level to be at; Grade 2 and 3 are for lighter traffic.
36) What finishes does the Schlage L9050 come in for matching existing hardware?
Twelve finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. On commercial jobs 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless are the two you will see most often on existing openings, so match the BHMA number off the old lock rather than matching by eye.
37) Are the Emtek mortise entrance locksets an alternative to a Schlage L9050?
They are not a functional alternative. The Emtek 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton, 3106 Manhattan, and 3019 Brisbane brass mortise entrance locksets are all dummy function - they mount trim on a door leaf that does not latch or lock. The L9050 is a keyed Entrance/Office lock whose latchbolt is deadlocked by an auxiliary latch when the door closes, so a dummy set only suits the inactive leaf of a pair.
38) Is a Sargent 130KB thumbturn a substitute for the thumbturn on a Schlage L9050?
No. The Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn for the 8200 Series, and the 130W is a standard duty mortise thumbturn with a round backplate for the 7800 Series. Those are trim parts for their own lock bodies. The thumbturn that locks the outside lever on the L9050 comes as part of the lockset, which is a heavy duty assembly, not a loose thumbturn.
39) What passage mortise lock pairs with a Schlage L9050 for the unkeyed doors in the same building?
The Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose and a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the 3810E is the same passage lock with escutcheon trim, both covering 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors. They match the L9050's 2-3/4 inch backset, and the rose versus escutcheon choice parallels the L9050's own wrought rose and escutcheon trim options.
40) Is there a battery powered mortise lock that avoids running power to the door?
The Dormakaba PowerPlex P2066 Series is a mortise lock in the PowerPlex 2000 Series, and the Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 is an electronic pushbutton keyless mortise lock for wide stile applications. The BEST 45HZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override. Compared with these, the L9050 is a non-electronic lock requiring no power at all, operated by key and thumbturn.
