Schlage L9050P ACCB 626 RH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage L9050 entrance/office function actually work day to day?
The L9050 is the entrance/office function. The latchbolt retracts by lever from either side until the outside lever is made inoperative, either by key from outside or by the inside thumbturn. With the outside locked, the latch still retracts by key outside or by the inside lever, so egress is never blocked. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. Practically, an office occupant can lock the door from inside with the thumbturn and leave it locked without touching a key.
2) Will the Schlage L9050 mortise lock fit my door, and what backset does it use?
It is built for 1-3/4 inch doors with a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the standard commercial mortise prep. The lock case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch and the armor front is 1-1/4 x 8 inches. If your door is thicker or thinner than 1-3/4 inches, this configuration is not the one to order. Note that the L cast/forged escutcheon trim is offered for 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon for 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors.
3) Do I have to specify handing on the Schlage L9050?
Yes. The L9050 is a handed lock and ships either LH (left hand) or RH (right hand), so you need to determine the swing before ordering. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your left it is a left hand door, on your right it is a right hand door.
4) Will the L9050 latch into the strike already in my frame?
The lock is supplied with the Schlage 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, with a 1-3/16 inch lip and a box. If your existing frame has an ANSI 4-7/8 inch square corner strike cutout, the new strike drops into the same prep. Radius corner or T-strike frames will need the frame reworked or a different strike specified.
5) What cylinder options can I get on the L9050, and can I order it less cylinder for my own keyway?
Four cylinder choices are offered: P for a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, L for less conventional cylinder, J for Schlage FSIC less core, and B for SFIC less core prep. If your building is on an existing small format or Schlage full size core system, order the less-core version and drop in your own cores. Keying is specified separately as keyed different or keyed alike, or none if you are going less cylinder.
6) Does using an interchangeable core change the security grade of the L9050?
It does. As supplied with a conventional cylinder the L9000 lock is ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security. With Schlage FSIC interchangeable cores it is Grade 1 operational, Grade 2 security. With SFIC cores it is Grade 1 operational, Grade 3 security. If a spec on the drawing calls for Grade 1 security specifically, the conventional cylinder is the one to order.
7) Can the Schlage L9050 go on a fire rated door?
Yes. The L9000 latch is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors (the exceptions in the series are the L9076 and L9077, not the L9050). The listing covers A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet, with the letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front. The levers also meet ADA requirements.
8) What is the closest equivalent to the Schlage L9050 entrance/office mortise lock from another manufacturer?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is a heavy duty Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, listed for 1-3/4 inch doors - the same Grade 1 rating, the same entrance/office function, and the same door thickness the L9050 is built for. The L9050 differs in how it is ordered: handing, finish, rose or escutcheon style, and cylinder type are all selected separately, and it takes a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder as standard.
9) I need a mortise lock where the outside lever stays locked at all times and only a key retracts it - what should I use instead of the L9050?
The L9050 is entrance/office: the outside lever is locked or unlocked by key or inside thumbturn, so it can be left in an unlocked state. If you need the outside lever permanently locked with key-only entry, a storeroom function lock is the right part - the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option.
10) Does the L9050 include a deadbolt, and what do I order if I need one?
No - the L9050 is a non-deadbolt entrance/office function; the auxiliary latch simply deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. For a mortise lock with a deadbolt, the Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, and the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors. A standalone mortise deadbolt such as the Sargent 4874 double cylinder unit on a 2-3/4 inch backset is another route if you are adding a second point of locking.
11) Will a Baldwin 6301 mortise lock body drop into the same prep as a Schlage L9050?
No. The Baldwin 6301 entry/apartment mortise lock body, in both knob and lever versions, uses a 2-1/2 inch backset, while the L9050 is a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 4-7/16 inch by 6-1/16 inch by 1 inch case. Different backset means a different door prep and a different strike location, so the two are not interchangeable in an existing opening.
12) Our facility is standardized on small format interchangeable core - does the L9050 work or do I need a BEST lock?
The L9050 can be ordered with a B - SFIC less prep core cylinder or a J - Schlage FSIC less core option, so it accepts interchangeable cores without switching brands. If you prefer a BEST lock body, the 45H Series heavy duty mortise lock body in public entrance function and the 45HCA intruder function body are options, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 Grade 1 storeroom lockset offers an interchangeable core option - but note those are storeroom, public entrance, and intruder functions rather than the entrance/office function the L9050 provides.
13) What finishes and trim styles does the L9050 Accent lever come in?
The Accent lever is offered in eight finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, and 643E aged bronze. Trim is either an A or B wrought rose, an L cast/forged escutcheon, or an N wrought escutcheon. The same lever, rose and finish are supplied for both sides of the door with a matching latch and strike.
14) I need the same look across my building's offices, exit devices and other doors. Will the L9050 lever match?
It will. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so one lever design and finish carries across office doors, electrified openings and stairwell exit devices. That matters if you are standardizing a facility rather than replacing a single door.
15) What is the difference between the L9050 office function and a storeroom or classroom mortise lock?
The L9050 lets an occupant lock the outside lever from inside with a thumbturn and unlock it the same way, which is what you want on an office or a tenant suite. A storeroom function keeps the outside lever locked at all times with key access only, like the Cal-Royal NM8080 or the Accentra 8805FL. A classroom function is locked and unlocked only by key from the outside, as on the Cal-Royal NM8070 or the Corbin Russwin ML2003. Pick the L9050 only where you want occupant control of the lock.
16) What is an equivalent entrance/office mortise lock if I am not standardizing on Schlage?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is the closest match in the same function: Grade 1 heavy duty entrance/office mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, also built for 1-3/4 inch doors. For a non-keyed office door the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset. Be aware the Hager is non-keyed, so it will not give you the key control the L9050 does.
17) Is the L9050 heavy enough for a high traffic commercial opening, and what is the lock case made of?
It is a heavy duty commercial mortise lock, ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000 Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, with an F04 function designation. The case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. A security blocking hub prevents picking by pulling the levers off. That is the right specification for main entry, tenant suite and office doors in schools, healthcare and multi-family.
18) Does the L9050 have a deadbolt?
No. The L9050 is a non-deadbolt function, latchbolt only, with an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. If a project requires a separate deadbolt throw on the same opening, you need a different L Series function or a separate deadbolt such as the Sargent 4874 double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset.
19) Can I order a run of L9050 locks keyed alike for one building?
Yes. Keying is selected at order: keyed different is standard, or keyed alike when you want one key to open multiple locks. There is also a free text field for special cylinder or keying requirements, which is where a master key system, a specific keyway, or an existing building system gets called out. Standard as-supplied is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway.
20) Is the Schlage LE mobile-enabled mortise lock an equal-grade alternative to the L9050 for an office door?
Not on grade. The L9050 is ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 with an F04 function designation, while the Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED is Grade 2, covering privacy, office, and apartment functions on 1-3/4 inch doors with a 3 hour fire rating. If you need a Grade 1 electronic mortise lock, the Schlage LEMD-GRW ENGAGE wireless mortise lock with 125kHz proximity reader is Grade 1 with a 3 hour fire rating.
21) Can I use a non-keyed office mortise lock instead of the L9050 to save a cylinder?
If the opening does not need key control, the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon, non-keyed, on a 2-3/4 inch backset and listed for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch doors. The L9050 is a keyed single cylinder lock on the same 2-3/4 inch backset, so a key can retract the latchbolt from outside when the lever is locked. Note the L9050 can also be ordered less cylinder if you are supplying your own.
22) What is the difference between the L9050 and an electronic mortise lock like the Schlage CO-100 or TownSteel FME-2000?
The L9050 is a mechanical lock with no electronics - it is operated by lever, key, and thumbturn only. The Schlage CO-100 is a standalone electronic mortise lock with a keypad reader, Grade 1, heavy duty, for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lockset with RFID technology, also for 1-3/4 inch doors. All three share the same 1-3/4 inch door thickness, so the door prep decision comes down to whether you want credential-based access or straight key control.
23) The L9050 is handed - is there a mortise lock I can stock that works either hand?
Yes. The L9050 is ordered left hand or right hand and must be specified at time of order. If you want one part number that covers both, the BEST 45H Series heavy duty mortise lock body in public entrance function is field reversible, and the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation. Neither is entrance/office function, so match the function to the opening before substituting.
24) I need an anti-ligature mortise lock for a behavioral health room - can I use the L9050 Accent lever?
The L9050 uses a standard Accent lever design and is not a ligature resistant trim. For behavioral health openings, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in stainless steel and the MRX-A-01 is a ligature resistant arch trim mortise lockset, both passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 ligature resistant, ADA compliant hospital passage push/pull paddleset.
25) What mortise lock should I use if the door is thinner than 1-3/4 inch?
The L9050 lock body is specified for 1-3/4 inch doors. For thinner doors, the Alarm Lock DL2700CR classroom function electronic mortise lock and the DL3500CR Grade 1 electronic mortise lock both cover 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch. The Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock body is listed for 1-3/8 inch and over on a 2-1/2 inch backset, which is a different prep from the L9050.
26) Are the Emtek mortise entrance locksets an alternative to the L9050?
Only for appearance, not for function. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton, and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are all dummy function - they do not latch or lock and are used on inactive leaves. The L9050 is a keyed single cylinder Grade 1 commercial lock with a working latchbolt and auxiliary deadlatch.
