Schlage L9050P MERMER 626 RH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage L9050 entrance/office function actually work day to day?
The L9050 is the entrance/office function (ANSI F04). Either lever retracts the latchbolt until the outside lever is locked, which you do with the key outside or the thumbturn inside. Once locked, only the key outside or the inside lever will retract the latch, and the inside lever is always free so you never need a key to get out. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. There is no deadbolt in this one, so it is a latch-only lock.
2) What door thickness and backset does the Schlage L9050 mortise lock require?
Standard build is a 2-3/4 inch backset on a 1-3/4 inch door, which is the usual commercial thickness. The mortise pocket has to take a case measuring 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, with a 1-1/4 x 8 inch armor front. If you are ordering the L cast/forged escutcheon, that trim covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors, and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch, so thicker doors are an options question, not a standard build.
3) Do I have to specify handing on the Schlage L9050?
Yes, it is a handed lock, ordered left hand or right hand. Determine the hand from the outside of the door: hinges on your left with the door swinging away from you is left hand. Get it wrong and the lever and latch orientation will be backwards on the opening.
4) Will the L9050 work into my existing strike prep?
It ships with the Schlage 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner with a 1-3/16 inch lip and a box. That is the standard ANSI square-corner mortise strike size, so if your frame is already cut for a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 strike it drops in. Frames prepped for a radius-corner or T-strike will need a different strike or filing.
5) What cylinder comes with the Schlage L9050, and can I get it less cylinder for my own keyway?
Standard is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. You can also order it four other ways: P for that conventional 6-pin, L for less conventional cylinder, J for Schlage FSIC less core, and B for SFIC less prep core. Locksmiths keying into an existing system normally take L, J or B and supply their own core. Note the grade shifts with the cylinder: full Grade 1 security with the conventional cylinder, Grade 2 with FSIC cores, Grade 3 with SFIC cores, operational Grade 1 throughout.
6) Is the Schlage L9050 fire rated for a labeled door?
It is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how the inspector verifies it. The lock is certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Series 1000, Grade 1 operational and security, meets ADA requirements, and meets the Buy American Act.
7) Should I use the L9050 office function or a storeroom function lock?
Pick the L9050 entrance/office when the occupant needs to control the door themselves: the thumbturn inside lets staff lock the outside lever at the end of the day and leave it unlocked during business hours. A storeroom function is the opposite, outside lever always locked and key-only entry every time, which is what you want on mechanical rooms and supply closets. For that, look at the Cal-Royal NM8080 or the Accentra 8805FL, both Grade 1 storeroom mortise locks. For a classroom, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 and Cal-Royal NM8070 are the Grade 1 classroom-function options.
8) I need a mortise lock where the outside lever stays locked at all times - what should I order instead of the L9050?
The L9050 is an entrance/office function: the outside lever is locked by key or inside thumbturn and can be left unlocked, so it is not a fixed-locked opening. For an outside lever that always requires the key, look at a storeroom function such as the Accentra 8805FL Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with Arcadia lever, or the Cal-Royal NM8080 Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset, which offers an interchangeable core option.
9) The opening is a classroom, not an office - what mortise lock do I use in place of the L9050?
The L9050 is an entrance/office function and does not give you classroom operation. Classroom-function mortise locks in the same Grade 1 class include the Corbin Russwin ML2003 Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors and the Cal-Royal NM8070 Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, also for 1-3/4 inch doors. For classroom security with a visual status indicator, the Marks USA LA318GJ classroom security indicator mortise lockset is Grade 1 and prepped for 1-3/4 inch doors.
10) Can I order a set of these keyed alike for an office suite?
Yes. Keying is a required selection: keyed different (standard) or keyed alike for multiple locks, and there is a text field for special cylinder or keying requirements such as a master key system or a specific keyway. If you are keying into an existing Schlage system, use that field or order less cylinder and pin your own.
11) What finishes and trim styles does the Merano lever L9050 come in?
Eight finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome and 643E aged bronze. Trim is the Merano lever with a choice of the MER Meranot rose, the L cast/forged escutcheon, or the N wrought escutcheon. Same lever, rose and finish on both sides with matching latch and strike. For a building standard, 626 satin chrome is the common commercial pick.
12) Will these levers match the exit devices and other hardware on the rest of my building?
All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so you can carry the Merano lever and finish across mortise locks, exit device trim and electrified openings. Keying can also be suited across tubular, exit device and multipoint locks.
13) What is a direct alternative to the Schlage L9050 in the same function?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is the closest match in the comparable range: heavy duty Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, listed for 1-3/4 inch doors, same as the L9050. The difference comes down to the trim catalog and the keying system, the Schlage carries the C keyway conventional cylinder as standard and suites with Von Duprin trim. If the opening needs a deadbolt as well as a latch, neither of these covers it; the L9050 is a non-deadbolt function.
14) Can I get the L9050 with an electronic credential reader or keypad?
No. The L9050 is a mechanical lock, key and thumbturn only, with no electronics. If the opening needs access control, Schlage's own alternatives in the mortise format include the CO-100 standalone keypad mortise lock and the ENGAGE LEMD wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader. TownSteel's FME-2000 is a Grade 1 RFID mortise lockset if you want a different brand.
15) Is the L9050 heavy enough for a high-traffic entrance in an apartment building or school?
It is a commercial heavy duty lock, Grade 1 operational and security under A156.13, with a cold rolled steel case finished in zinc dichromate plating. A security blocking hub stops anyone picking the lock by pulling the levers off. That is the right spec for main entrances, office suites and corridor doors that see constant use.
16) Is there a non-keyed version of the office function if I do not need a cylinder in the door?
The L9050 is a keyed single-cylinder lock with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder standard. If the opening does not need a key, the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon in a non-keyed configuration with a 2-3/4 inch backset, matching the L9050's 2-3/4 inch backset, and it covers 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch doors.
17) The door is thicker than 1-3/4 inches - what mortise lock covers that?
The L9050 Merano lever mortise lock is specified for 1-3/4 inch doors. For thicker leaves, the Hager 3810E Grade 1 passage mortise lock with escutcheon covers 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch doors on a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock body is listed for 1-3/8 inch and over on a 2-1/2 inch backset. Note those are passage and entry/storeroom functions rather than entrance/office.
18) I want keypad or credential access on this office door instead of a key - what replaces the L9050?
The L9050 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock keyed with a conventional cylinder. For credential access on a mortise prep, the Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD is a mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment functions, Grade 2, 3-hour fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch doors. The BEST 45HZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override, and the Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 is an electronic pushbutton keyless mortise lock.
19) Can I use a Sargent 4874 or a Kaba Ilco 185 in place of the L9050?
No - those are deadbolt-only devices, not lever locksets. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset and the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a deadbolt function mortise lock; neither retracts a latchbolt with a lever. The L9050 is a non-deadbolt entrance/office lock whose latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side unless the outside is locked, with the inside lever always free for egress.
20) What is the difference between the L9050 and the Sargent 7925 for a dormitory corridor door?
The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock in the 7900 Series with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. The Schlage L9050 is a Grade 1 heavy duty entrance/office lock with no deadbolt - the outside lever is locked by key or inside thumbturn and the auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. Pick the 7925 where the opening needs a throw bolt, the L9050 where latch-only operation is wanted.
21) The L9050 is handed - is there a field reversible mortise lock I can stock instead?
The L9050 is a handed lock, ordered left hand or right hand. If you want one part number to cover both hands, the BEST 45H Series heavy duty mortise lock body is public entrance function with field reversible operation, and the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation. Both are different functions than entrance/office, so confirm the opening before substituting.
22) I need a behavioral health opening - can the L9050 Merano lever be used?
The L9050 uses a Merano lever, a standard lever trim. For ligature resistant openings, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in stainless steel for 1-3/4 inch doors, the MRX-A-01 is the same in a satin stainless arch trim, and the Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant. Those three are passage function rather than keyed entrance/office.
23) For a bed/bath or restroom door, what mortise lock do I order instead of the L9050?
The L9050 is a keyed entrance/office lock and is not a privacy function. For privacy openings, the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset covering 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors - the same 2-3/4 inch backset the L9050 uses.
24) Can I get the same office function with an interchangeable core instead of a conventional cylinder?
Yes - the L9050 can be ordered with a B SFIC less-prep core or a J Schlage FSIC less-core option in place of the P conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, and an L less-conventional-cylinder option is also available. Among comparable mortise locksets, the Cal-Royal NM8080 Grade 1 storeroom is offered with an interchangeable core option, though that is storeroom rather than entrance/office function.
25) Is the Emtek 3102 Memphis mortise entrance lockset an alternative to the L9050?
No. The Emtek 3102 Memphis is a dummy function mortise entrance lockset - trim only, with no latch operation. The Schlage L9050 is a keyed single cylinder entrance/office lock with a working latchbolt, a 4-7/16 inch x 6-1/16 inch x 1 inch mortise case and a 2-3/4 inch backset, so it is not a like-for-like swap.
