Schlage L9050P 05B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage L9050 Entrance/Office function actually work at the door?
The L9050 is an entrance/office function with no deadbolt. The lever on either side retracts the latchbolt until the outside lever is locked, either by key from outside or by the inside thumbturn. Once locked, the outside side needs the key, while the inside lever still retracts the latch. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress, and the auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. That makes it the usual choice for an office or suite door where staff want to lock up from inside without carrying a key.
2) Will the Schlage L9050 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset prep?
That is exactly the prep it is built for. The L9050 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 1-3/4 inch door thickness, which is the standard commercial door. The mortise pocket needs to take a case measuring 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, with a 1-1/4 x 8 inch armor front. If your doors are thicker than 1-3/4 inches, the L cast/forged escutcheon trim covers 1-3/8 through 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 through 2-1/4 inches.
3) Do I need to specify a hand when ordering the L9050?
Yes. The L9050 is a handed lock, so you need to know whether the opening is left hand, right hand, left hand reverse or right hand reverse before you order. Stand outside the door: the side the hinges are on gives the hand, and a door that swings out toward you is a reverse. Getting this wrong on a mortise lock means the lever and latch face the wrong way.
4) What will the L9050 latch into, and do I need a new strike?
A strike ships with it. The standard is the Schlage 10-072 box strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with square corners and a 1-3/16 inch lip. That is the common ANSI mortise strike prep, so if your frame already has a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 square corner cutout it drops straight in. Check the lip length against how far your frame face sits back from the door stop, since a lip that is too short or too long is the usual reason a replacement mortise lock does not latch cleanly.
5) What cylinder options does the Schlage L9050 come with, and can I use my own interchangeable cores?
Four cylinder choices. P gives you a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, which is the standard build. L is less conventional cylinder if you are supplying your own. J is prepped for Schlage full-size interchangeable core, less core. B is prepped for small format interchangeable core, less core. If you already run an FSIC or SFIC system in the building, order J or B and drop your own cores in. One thing to weigh for high security openings: the lock is Grade 1 security with a conventional cylinder, Grade 2 with FSIC cores and Grade 3 with SFIC cores.
6) Is the Schlage L9050 approved for a fire rated door?
It is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and the L9050 is not one of the two exceptions in the L9000 family (L9076 and L9077 are). The listing covers A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet under UL/cUL, and the letter F with the UL symbol stamped on the latch front is how an inspector confirms it in the field. It also meets ADA requirements, and California Referenced Standards Code compliance applies to levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less.
7) Can I key a set of L9050 locks alike so one key runs several offices?
Yes. Keying is a required selection: keyed different is standard, keyed alike is there for running several locks on one key, and there is a no-cylinder option when you are pairing the lock with less-cylinder builds and supplying cores yourself. If you need something more specific, such as a master key level or a particular keyway, put it in the special cylinder and keying requirements field with the order. The standard cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in the C keyway.
8) Is there a cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage L9050 entrance/office mortise lock?
Closest like-for-like in our catalog is the Cal-Royal NM8050, a heavy duty Grade 1 entrance/office mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, the same function and the same door thickness as the L9050. Baldwin's 6301LS is an entrance/apartment lever by lever mortise body, but note it is a 2-1/2 inch backset rather than the 2-3/4 inch the Schlage uses, so it is not a drop-in for an existing Schlage prep. The Hager 3850E is an office function with a 2-3/4 inch backset but non-keyed, so it will not give you the key control the L9050 does.
9) Does the L9050 include a deadbolt, and what do I order if I need one?
No - the Schlage L9050 is a non-deadbolt entrance/office function where the latchbolt is deadlocked by an auxiliary latch when the door closes. If the opening needs a true deadbolt, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt in the 4870 Series on a 2-3/4 inch backset, matching the L9050 backset. The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with a deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Alarm Lock DL4500 is a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt with 2,000 user codes and a privacy keypad.
10) What is the difference between the L9050 and a Baldwin 6301 entry/apartment mortise lock?
Backset is the key difference. The Baldwin 6301 entry/apartment mortise lock body uses a 2-1/2 inch backset and is listed for doors 1-3/4 inch and over; it comes knob by knob as the 6301 or lever by lever as the 6301LS. The Schlage L9050 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset on a 1-3/4 inch door with an 05 lever. If the door is already prepped for one backset, the other will not drop in.
11) What ANSI grade and function code is the Schlage L9050, and will it hold up in a high traffic building?
Heavy duty, Grade 1 under ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000, both operational and security, and it carries the F04 function designation. The case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. That is the spec level facility managers standardize on for schools, healthcare and government corridors where a Grade 2 tubular lockset would not last.
12) Which rose or escutcheon should I pick for the L9050 lever?
Four trim choices, and door thickness narrows it. A and B are wrought roses. L is a cast or forged escutcheon, available on 1-3/8 through 2-1/2 inch doors. N is a wrought escutcheon for 1-3/4 through 2-1/4 inch doors. Roses are the lower profile look and escutcheons cover more of the door face, which helps when you are replacing older trim and there is existing prep or wear to hide. The 05 lever design is what this build uses, with the same lever, rose and finish on both sides.
13) Can I match the L9050 finish to the exit devices and other Schlage trim already in my building?
Twelve finishes are offered: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. On the trim side, all L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so a building running Von Duprin panics on the stair doors can carry the same lever design through the office openings.
14) Should I use the L9050 entrance/office function or a storeroom function mortise lock?
It comes down to who controls the lock. The L9050 lets anyone inside lock the outside lever with a thumbturn and unlock it again, which suits an office or tenant suite where the occupant decides. A storeroom function keeps the outside lever locked at all times and only a key gets you in, with no way to leave it unlocked, which is what you want on mechanical rooms and supply closets. If storeroom is the right call, comparable Grade 1 options include the Accentra 8805FL in the 8800 Series and the Cal-Royal NM8080, which offers an interchangeable core option on 1-3/4 inch doors.
15) Is the L9050 an electronic or access control lock?
No, it is a purely mechanical keyed mortise lock, no wiring and no credential reader. If you need electronic access on the same opening, the L Series has motor-driven electrified functions with auto-detect 12V/24V DC, selectable EL/EU, and RX, DPS, latchbolt and deadbolt monitoring. Electronic alternatives we carry include the Schlage LEMD-GRW, a Grade 1 ENGAGE wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating, and the BEST 45HW wired electromechanical mortise lock running 12V/24V.
16) Can the L9050 be used on a federal or Buy American job?
Yes, the L Series meets the Buy American Act. It also carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings, which matters on coastal work, and ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 with UL listing for forced entry resistance. For a high security cylinder on the same lock, the UL437 listed option is the Primus 20-500 Series cylinder.
17) Is there a non-keyed mortise lock if I do not need a cylinder on the office door?
Yes. The Schlage L9050 is a keyed single-cylinder lock, so if the door does not need key control, the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon, non-keyed, on a 2-3/4 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inches. For a latch that never locks at all, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and Hager offers passage in the 3810S with rose trim and the 3810E with escutcheon trim.
18) My door is 1-5/8 inch thick - will the L9050 fit, or do I need something else?
The Schlage L9050 is specified for a 1-3/4 inch door. For a thinner door in the 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch range, the Alarm Lock Trilogy mortise locks cover it: the DL2700CR is a Grade 1 classroom function electronic mortise lock with a weatherproof design, and the DL3500CR is a Grade 1 classroom function electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes. Note those are keypad locks rather than key-only entrance/office locks.
19) What is the electronic equivalent if I want credential access instead of a keyed L9050?
The L9050 is a mechanical, non-electronic keyed lock. For credential-based access on a mortise prep, the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and Greenwich trim, right hand, with a 3 hour fire rating. The Accentra nexTouch NTM623-NR is a Grade 1 mortise lock with a capacitive touchscreen keypad, no deadbolt, with cylinder override. The TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID technology for 1-3/4 inch doors.
20) Is the Emtek 3102 Memphis mortise entrance lockset a substitute for a Schlage L9050?
No. The Emtek 3102 Memphis, along with the 3104 Hamilton, 3106 Manhattan and 3019 Brisbane, are dummy function mortise entrance locksets - trim only, with no working latch or key. The Schlage L9050 is a keyed single-cylinder entrance/office lock with a functioning latchbolt and thumbturn. Use a dummy only on an inactive leaf.
21) Can I order just a mortise lock body without trim, like I would with the L9050?
The Schlage L9050 is supplied as a complete lockset with the 05 lever and matching rose or escutcheon on both faces. If you only need a lock case, BEST sells bodies separately: the 45HCAC is a heavy duty public entrance function mortise lock body with field reversible operation, and the 45HCAINL is a heavy duty 45HCA mortise lockbody with intruder function. Those are lock bodies, so trim is ordered separately.
22) I need an anti-ligature mortise lock for a behavioral health unit - is the L9050 appropriate?
The L9050 with the 05 lever is a standard commercial lever lockset. For ligature resistant openings, TownSteel offers the MRX-L-01, a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01, a satin stainless steel ligature resistant arch trim mortise lockset, also passage function. Marks USA offers the 5PDN, a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel.
23) For a dormitory or corridor door, is the L9050 the right function or is there a better choice?
The L9050 entrance/office function retracts the latchbolt from either side unless the outside lever is locked by key or thumbturn. For a dorm corridor door that needs a deadbolt with exit function, the Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty corridor/dormitory exit function mortise lock in the 7900 Series with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt.
24) Can I get an electrified version of this mortise lock for access control?
The L9050 itself is a mechanical non-electronic lock. For an electrified mortise lock, the BEST 45HW is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock with 12V/24V operation, and the Command Access ML190 Series motorized mortise lock offers field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC in a heavy-duty storeroom function.
25) Is a Sargent 130KB thumbturn a replacement for the thumbturn on an L9050?
No - the Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn built for the 8200 Series, and the 130W is a standard duty mortise thumbturn with a round backplate for the 7800 Series. Those are Sargent trim components, not Schlage parts. The L9050 is a complete Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lockset whose outside lever is locked by key or inside thumbturn as part of the lockset.
