Schlage L9050P 02B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9050 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset prep?
That is exactly the prep the L9050 is built for. Backset is 2-3/4 inches and the lock is set up for 1-3/4 inch doors, which is the standard commercial door thickness. The case is 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, so the door needs a full mortise pocket cut for it, not a bored prep. If your doors are thicker, the rose and escutcheon choice widens the range: the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch.
2) What does the Entrance/Office function on a Schlage L9050 actually do at the door?
Both levers work normally until you lock the outside, either with the key from outside or the thumbturn on the inside. With the outside locked, the key retracts the latchbolt from outside and the inside lever always retracts it from inside, so egress is never blocked. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt once the door closes. This is the office pattern: staff lock up from inside at the end of the day without carrying a key. Note there is no deadbolt in the L9050 case, only the latchbolt.
3) Do I have to specify a hand when ordering a Schlage L9050 mortise lock?
Yes. The L9050 is a handed lock, so you need to know whether the opening is left hand, left hand reverse, right hand or right hand reverse before you order. Stand outside the door: the side the hinges are on gives you left or right, and a door that swings out toward you is the reverse. Getting this wrong means the lever and latch face the wrong way.
4) Which cylinder option do I pick on a Schlage L9050 if my building is already on interchangeable cores?
Four cylinder choices cover it. P ships with a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, which is the standard build. J is prepped for Schlage full-size interchangeable core, less core, so you drop in the FSIC cores your keying system already uses. B is prepped for small format interchangeable core, less core. L is less conventional cylinder, for when your locksmith is supplying the cylinder. One thing to weigh: the lock is Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security with the standard cylinder, but with FSIC cores the security rating is Grade 2, and with SFIC cores it is Grade 3.
5) Will the strike that comes with a Schlage L9050 drop into my existing ANSI frame cutout?
The lock ships with the 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches with square corners, a 1-3/16 inch lip and a box behind it. That is the standard square corner strike footprint, so on a hollow metal frame already prepped for a square corner ANSI strike it lands in the existing cutout. Frames with radius corner prep need a radius corner strike ordered instead, and the lip length has to suit how far the frame stop sits back from the door face.
6) Is the Schlage L9050 approved for a 3 hour fire rated door?
It is. The L9000 latch is UL listed for 3 hour fire doors, and the listing covers A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how the inspector confirms it on site. The lock is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000, Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, and it meets ADA requirements and the Buy American Act.
7) Should I use an office function mortise lock or a storeroom function on a tenant suite door?
It comes down to who does the locking. The L9050 office function leaves both levers free until someone deliberately locks the outside with the thumbturn or key, which suits a suite or office door staff secure at close of business. A storeroom function keeps the outside lever locked at all times and only a key gets you in, which is what you want on an electrical room, IT closet or supply room where the door must never be left unsecured by accident. For that pattern, look at the Accentra 8805FL or the Cal-Royal NM8080, both Grade 1 storeroom mortise locks. For a classroom door, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is the Grade 1 classroom equivalent.
8) What is the closest alternative to a Schlage L9050 if I need the same office function from another brand?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is the direct counterpart: Grade 1 heavy duty entrance/office mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, listed for 1-3/4 inch doors, same as the L9050. Hager's 3850E is an office function mortise lock with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset, but it is the non-keyed office version and covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors, so it is not a swap if you need the key cylinder. Where the L9050 pulls ahead is the option depth: 12 finishes, four rose and escutcheon styles, and four cylinder preps on one part number.
9) What mortise lock should I use if the door needs to stay locked from the outside at all times instead of office function?
Use a storeroom function instead. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option for 1-3/4 inch doors. Storeroom keeps the outside lever fixed and key-operated with no thumbturn to leave it unlocked, where the L9050 Entrance/Office function lets the outside lever be locked and unlocked by key or inside thumbturn.
10) Which mortise lock replaces the L9050 on a classroom door?
For classroom function, the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset in the ML2000 Series, also for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both carry the Classroom function rather than the Entrance/Office function of the L9050, so the outside lever is controlled by key only and there is no inside thumbturn in the sequence.
11) Can I use a Sargent 4874 or a Kaba Ilco 185 in place of a keyed mortise lever lock?
No. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset in the 4870 Series, and the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a mortise deadbolt function with no handing. Both are deadbolt-only bodies with no latchbolt and no lever, so neither retracts a latch to let someone through the door. The L9050 is a keyed lever mortise lock with a latchbolt and an auxiliary latch that deadlocks it when the door closes. The 2-3/4 inch backset on the 4874 does match the L9050 backset, which is why the two get confused.
12) Which mortise lock should I specify for a behavioral health or ligature resistant opening?
The TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a stainless steel Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function, and the MRX-A-01 is a satin stainless steel ligature resistant arch trim mortise lockset, also passage, both for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. All three are passage function; the L9050 is a keyed Entrance/Office lock with a standard 02 lever, which is a conventional lever profile rather than a ligature resistant one.
13) What is the ANSI function code for a Schlage L9050 office lock?
F04 is the ANSI function, which is the entrance/office pattern a spec writer calls out on a door schedule. If the drawing says F04 mortise lock, Grade 1, the L9050 answers it. Watch the distinction from the storeroom and classroom functions, which are different ANSI codes and behave differently at the door.
14) Can I get a batch of Schlage L9050 locks keyed alike for one building?
Keying is a required choice on the order. KD keyed different is the standard, KA keyed alike puts a batch of locks on one key for a suite or a floor, and there is a none option when you are ordering less cylinder and supplying your own. Standard cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in the C keyway. If you need the locks tied into an existing master key system or a specific keyway, there is a free text field for those keying requirements when you order.
15) What finishes does the Schlage L9050 come in, and can I match the exit devices already in my building?
Twelve finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless are the two you will see most on commercial openings. On matching, all L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so a floor mixing mortise locks and exit devices reads as one set.
16) Can I upgrade a Schlage L9050 to a high security key system later?
Yes, without changing the lock. A UL437 listed cylinder is an available option on the L Series; specify a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder. Order the lock with the P conventional cylinder prep or as L less cylinder and fit the Primus. The security blocking hub in the case also stops the pick attack that works by pulling the levers off.
17) What mortise lock adds access control or credential reading where a keyed lever lock will not?
For credentialed access on a mortise prep, the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and mobile enabled deadbolt with LED, 3 hour fire rated with Greenwich trim, right hand. The TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Dormakaba Saffire LX-I-M002 is an electronic RFID mortise lockset with BLE mobile access at BHMA Grade 2. The L9050 is mechanical and non-electronic, keyed on a conventional 6-pin C keyway.
18) What is the keyless alternative to a keyed entrance/office mortise lock for an office suite?
For keyless entry on a mortise prep, the Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 is an electronic pushbutton keyless mortise lock in the E-Plex 2000 Series, and the BEST 45HZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override. The Schlage CO-100 is a standalone electronic mortise lock with a keypad reader, Grade 1 heavy duty for 1-3/4 inch doors, in privacy function. The L9050 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock operated by a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, so credentials there are cut keys rather than codes.
19) Is an Emtek 3102 Memphis mortise entrance lockset a substitute for a Grade 1 keyed mortise lock?
No. The Emtek 3102 Memphis and the Emtek 3104 Hamilton are dummy function mortise entrance locksets, as is the Falcon MESC600DT dummy escutcheon lever trim. Dummy trim is fixed and does not operate a latch or accept a key. The L9050 is a keyed, single cylinder lock whose latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side unless the outside is locked by key or thumbturn.
20) What mortise lock should I order if the opening does not need a key at all?
For a non-keyed opening the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon, non-keyed, on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors. For a plain latching door with no locking at all, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating. The L9050 is a keyed single cylinder lock, so it is the choice only where a key needs to control the outside lever.
21) Which mortise lock do I use for a restroom or bedroom door instead of an entrance/office lock?
Use a privacy function. The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, the same backset the L9050 uses. Privacy locks are secured from the inside by the occupant; the L9050 carries the Entrance/Office function, where a key from outside controls the lever.
22) What is the difference between a Schlage L9050 and a BEST 45HCAC public entrance mortise lock?
The BEST 45HCAC is a heavy duty mortise lock body in the 45H Series with Public Entrance function and field reversible operation. The L9050 is a heavy duty Entrance/Office function lock and is handed. Field reversible means the BEST body can be set for either hand in the field; a handed lock has to be ordered to the hand of the opening. The BEST item is a lock body, so lever and rose trim are selected separately, while the L9050 ships with the 02 lever design and a rose or escutcheon choice.
23) What is the difference between a Schlage L9050 and a Sargent 7925 dormitory mortise lock?
The Sargent 7925 is a heavy duty Grade 1 dormitory exit function mortise lock in the 7900 Series with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, catalogued as Corridor/Dormitory function. The L9050 is a Grade 1 heavy duty Entrance/Office lock with no deadbolt - it is a latchbolt-only function with an auxiliary latch. Both are Grade 1 heavy duty mortise locks; the deciding factor is whether the opening needs a throwable deadbolt in the same case.
24) Which mortise lock takes an interchangeable core if I key my building on IC cylinders?
The Cal-Royal NM8080 is a heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option for 1-3/4 inch doors. The L9050 itself covers IC keying through its cylinder choices: B for SFIC less prep core, J for Schlage FSIC less core, L for less conventional cylinder, and P for a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. The difference is function - the NM8080 is storeroom, the L9050 is Entrance/Office.
25) What do I use instead of an L9050 on an electrified opening tied to access control?
The Command Access ML190 is a heavy-duty motorized mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC in storeroom function, and the BEST 45HW is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock with 12V/24V operation. Both are wired locks driven by a power supply and a control system. The L9050 is a non-electronic mechanical lock, so it needs no power run to the frame.
26) Is the 02 lever on the Schlage L9050 the same on both sides, and what is the lock body made of?
Same 02 lever, rose and finish on both faces, with the matching latch and strike included. The lock case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, and the armor front measures 1-1/4 by 8 inches. Heavy duty, commercial rated, so it holds up on a high traffic opening. The 02 is a straightforward return style lever, and all L Series levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code.
27) Is a Sargent 130KB thumbturn a replacement part for a keyed mortise entrance lock?
No. The Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn in the 8200 Series and the 130W is a mortise thumbturn with a round backplate in the 7800 Series. Those are thumbturn trim pieces, not locks - they have no case, latchbolt or cylinder. The L9050 is a complete mortise lock with a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch case, an armor front and a 10-072 box strike, and its inside thumbturn is part of the assembly.
