Schlage L9050P OMEB 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9050 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
That's the door thickness the L9050 is built for: 1-3/4 inches, the standard commercial door. It runs a 2-3/4 inch backset with a case measuring 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, so the door needs a full ANSI mortise pocket, not a bored prep. If your doors are thicker or thinner, the rose/escutcheon choice matters too: the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch.
2) What does the Entrance/Office function on a Schlage L9050 actually do day to day?
Lock the outside lever with the key or the inside thumbturn, and it stays locked until someone unlocks it, which is what an office door needs: staff pull the door shut at lunch and it is still locked at 5. Latchbolt retracts from either lever when unlocked. With the outside locked, the key outside or the lever inside retracts it. The inside lever is always free, so egress is never blocked, and an auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt once the door closes so it can't be shimmed. It's the F04 function code, non-deadbolt.
3) Do I have to specify handing when I order a Schlage L9050?
Handing matters here. The L9050 is a handed lock, so you need to know whether the opening is left or right hand (and whether it is a reverse) before you order. Stand outside the door, on the side you would use the key: hinges on your left is a left hand, hinges on your right is a right hand. Get it wrong on a mortise lock and the lever pitches the wrong way.
4) Can I get the Schlage L9050 keyed alike with the other locks in my building?
Yes, keyed alike is an ordering option on the L9050 alongside keyed different, which is the standard. Order KA when a set of doors should open on one key. The stock cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in the C keyway, so if your building is already on C keyway Schlage it drops into the existing system. Non-standard keyway or a specific key bitting can be given as a special keying instruction with the order.
5) How do I order a Schlage L9050 for a small format interchangeable core system?
Pick the cylinder option to match the system you already run. Four choices: P is the conventional 6-pin cylinder in C keyway, J is Schlage FSIC prepped less core, B is SFIC prepped less core, and L is less conventional cylinder if you are supplying your own. Note the security trade-off Schlage publishes: the lock is Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security as standard, but Grade 2 security with FSIC cores and Grade 3 security with SFIC cores. If your spec calls for Grade 1 security, order the conventional cylinder.
6) Is the Schlage L9050 approved for a fire rated door?
The L9000 Series is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how you verify it on the job. The L9050 is not one of the two excluded functions (L9076 and L9077). Levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code, and the series meets ADA requirements.
7) Will the strike that comes with the Schlage L9050 fit my existing frame prep?
The lock ships with the 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches, square corner, 1-3/16 inch lip, with a box. That is the standard ANSI mortise strike footprint, so it drops into a frame already prepped for a mortise lock. Square corner means it will not sit right in a frame cut for radius corner strikes. Check your lip length against the 1-3/16 inch: the lip has to reach past the frame trim so the latch does not catch on the stop.
8) The opening needs to stay locked from outside at all times with no thumbturn - what mortise lock should I use instead of an L9050?
Use a storeroom function instead. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series with an Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors with an interchangeable core option. Storeroom keeps the outside lever locked and retracted by key only, where the L9050 entrance/office function lets a thumbturn or key unlock the outside lever so it can be left free.
9) I need the same entrance function but the door is thicker than 1-3/4 inches - what are my options?
The Baldwin 6301LS is an entry/apartment lever by lever mortise lock body on a 2-1/2 inch backset rated for doors 1-3/4 inch and over, and the Baldwin 6310190RRLS is an entry/storeroom lever by lever mortise lock on a 2-1/2 inch backset for doors 1-3/8 inch and over. Note the backset difference: both Baldwins are 2-1/2 inch where the L9050 is 2-3/4 inch, so the door prep is not the same.
10) Should I use a mortise lock like the Schlage L9050 or a cylindrical lockset on an office door?
A mortise lock is the choice when the opening gets heavy traffic and you want the security and function range that a bored lock cannot give. The L9050 is heavy duty, Grade 1, commercial rated, with an auxiliary deadlatch and a security blocking hub that stops picking by pulling the levers off. The cost is preparation: the door has to be pocketed for a 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch case, which is a machining job, not a hole saw. On a light interior door already bored for a cylindrical lock, the L Series is not the retrofit.
11) What else could I buy instead of the Schlage L9050 for an office or entrance door?
The closest direct swap in another brand is the Cal-Royal NM8050, a heavy duty Grade 1 Entrance/Office mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, also built for 1-3/4 inch doors. If the door is a corridor or dorm opening that needs a deadbolt as well, the Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty Corridor/Dormitory mortise lock with a single cylinder deadbolt. If the door should stay locked outside at all times with key-only entry, look at storeroom function instead: the Accentra 8805FL or the Cal-Royal NM8080.
12) I need keypad or card access on this door, not a key. Is there an electronic version?
The L9050 is a purely mechanical lock, no electronics. For credential access on a mortise prep, Schlage's own LE Series and ENGAGE Series cover it: the LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating, and the CO-100 mortise is a Grade 1 standalone keypad lock for 1-3/4 inch doors. Outside Schlage, the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty RFID mortise lockset and the Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 is a pushbutton keyless mortise lock.
13) Will the Omega lever on the L9050 match the exit devices and other Schlage hardware already in my building?
Levers across the L Series suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so a building running those can carry one lever design through the whole opening schedule. The Omega lever comes in twelve finishes, from 605 bright brass and 606 satin brass through 613 oil rubbed bronze, 622 matte black, 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless, so matching an existing finish standard is usually possible.
14) Does the Schlage L9050 have a deadbolt?
No deadbolt on the L9050. It is a single cylinder keyed lock with a latchbolt only, backed by an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. That satisfies most office and entrance openings and keeps egress single motion on the inside lever. If your spec or insurer calls for a separate throw bolt, you want a different function: the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with a deadbolt, and the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset.
15) Is the Schlage L9050 Buy American compliant for a government job?
The L Series meets the Buy American Act, and the L9000 is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 for Grade 1 Security and Operational, Series 1000. It also carries ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 and UL listing, plus Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings for jurisdictions that require them. That combination is what most federal, state and institutional specs are asking for on a mortise lockset.
16) I do not need the door keyed - is there a simpler mortise lock than the L9050?
Yes. For an office door without a cylinder, the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 non-keyed office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors - the same backset the L9050 uses. For a door that only needs to latch, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock in the MA Series with field reversible operation, and the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose trim on a 2-3/4 inch backset. The L9050 is a keyed single cylinder lock, so those drop the cylinder and the key control with it.
17) Can I use an Emtek 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance lockset in place of a Schlage L9050?
No. The Emtek 3106 Manhattan is a dummy mortise entrance lockset - a dummy has no working latch and no key function, so it is used on an inactive leaf or a pull-only door. The same applies to the Emtek 3104 Hamilton and 3102 Memphis, both dummy function. The L9050 is a keyed single cylinder entrance/office lock with a working latchbolt and an inside lever that is always free for egress.
18) What mortise lock should I use if I want keypad or credential access instead of a keyed L9050?
Several electronic mortise locks cover that opening. The Schlage CO-100-MS-40-KP is a Grade 1 heavy duty standalone electronic mortise lock with a keypad reader for 1-3/4 inch doors. The BEST 45HZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override. The Accentra NTM623-NR nexTouch Generation 3 is a Grade 1 mortise lock with a capacitive touchscreen keypad, no deadbolt, with cylinder override. The TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty RFID mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors. The L9050 is a mechanical lock with no electronics, so credential audit and code changes are the reason to move to one of these.
19) For a behavioral health or anti-ligature opening, what mortise lock replaces an L9050 lever lock?
The TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset with a passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty ligature resistant arch trim mortise lockset in satin stainless steel, also passage function on 1-3/4 inch doors. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset, ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. All three are passage function, so they latch without keying, where the L9050 is a keyed single cylinder lock.
20) Which mortise lock do I use for a dormitory or corridor door where the deadbolt retracts on egress?
The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock in the 7900 Series with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. The L9050 is a non-deadbolt entrance/office function - its auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes, but there is no deadbolt in the case. If the corridor opening calls for a throwing deadbolt, the 7925 covers it.
21) Is a BEST 45HCAC public entrance mortise lock body the same thing as a Schlage L9050?
Not the same. The BEST 45HCAC is a heavy duty mortise lock body with a public entrance function and field reversible operation - it is sold as a lock body, with trim specified separately. The L9050 is a handed entrance/office lock supplied with the lever, rose and finish for both sides plus a coordinating latch and strike, and its standard strike is the 10-072 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip.
22) I need the door to unlock from an access control system - what replaces a mechanical L9050?
For a wired electrified mortise lock, the BEST 45HW is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock with 12V/24V operation, and the Command Access ML19092-M is a heavy-duty motorized mortise lock in the ML190 Series with field selectable EL/EU operation and 24VDC power in a storeroom function. For wireless, the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and Greenwich trim, right hand, with a 3 hour fire rating. The L9050 has no electronics, so any of these is the change if the opening is going on access control.
23) Will a Kaba Ilco 185 Series mortise lock work in the same door prep as an L9050?
The Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a deadbolt function mortise lock with no handing. The L9050 is handed and uses a 4-7/16 inch by 6-1/16 inch by 1 inch case on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/4 inch by 8 inch armor front. Because the 185 is a deadbolt and the L9050 is a latching lever lock, they are not interchangeable in one prep - confirm the existing mortise pocket against the L9050 case dimensions before ordering.
24) What is the Schlage L9050 lock case made of, and will it hold up in a high traffic corridor?
The lock body is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, a plated finish that resists corrosion inside the door pocket. It is a heavy duty commercial lock certified Grade 1 for both operational and security under A156.13, which is the top grade and the one written into corridor, lobby and school specs. Deadbolt functions in the family add an anti-saw pin, and the security blocking hub prevents picking the lock by pulling the levers off.
25) Can I upgrade a Schlage L9050 to a higher security cylinder later?
Yes. The lock ships with a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, and a UL437 listed locking cylinder is an option on the series if you specify a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder. That is the route when a door needs key control and drill/pick resistance beyond a standard pin tumbler. You can also order the lock less cylinder and fit your own.
26) What privacy-function mortise lock pairs with an L9050 for restrooms in the same building?
The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors - the same 2-3/4 inch backset the L9050 uses. Both are privacy rather than keyed, which is what a restroom needs where the L9050 keyed entrance/office function is used on the offices.
