Schlage S10SAT626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What backset does the Schlage S10 come with, and will it fit an existing 2-3/4 inch prep?
Both. The S10 ships with the 16-203 latch, which covers a 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset, so it drops into either of the two standard bored preps without ordering a different latch. The latch face is a 1 inch x 2-1/4 inch square corner. If your door was bored for a 1-1/8 inch latch face, the included A501-878 adapter handles it, and the G506-815 sleeve covers a 1 inch housing.
2) Will the S10 latch into the strike plate already in my frame?
The S10 comes with the 10-001 strike: a square corner T-strike with a box, 1-1/8 inch x 2-3/4 inch, with a 1-1/8 inch lip length. If your frame is already cut for a square corner 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 strike, the new one drops straight in. Round corner or ANSI full lip preps will not match, so plan on the frame cutout matching the square corner T-strike or on reusing the existing strike if it accepts a 1 inch x 2-1/4 inch square corner latch face.
3) Do I need to specify handing when ordering a Schlage S10 passage lever?
Only for the Flair lever. The S10 itself is non-handed, and the Jupiter, Neptune, and Saturn levers install either way with no handing call-out. The Flair lever is the exception, and there you specify right hand or left hand on the order. Get that one wrong and the lever points the wrong direction on the door.
4) Is a Grade 2 lever like the Schlage S10 heavy enough for an apartment building or small hotel?
For interior traffic, yes. The S Series is built for light commercial work such as small hotels, laboratories, office tenant space, and apartment buildings, and the S10 meets or exceeds BHMA/ANSI A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2. The levers are solid pressure cast zinc on heat treated steel components, with independent lever torsion springs so the lever does not sag over time. For an abused opening like a stairwell or a school corridor, step up to a Grade 1 passage set: the Falcon K101 or the Corbin Russwin CL3110 are both Grade 1 passage cylindrical levers.
5) What is the closest Grade 2 cylindrical passage lever to the Schlage S10?
The Schlage S10 is a Grade 2 cylindrical passage lever with both levers always unlocked. The Accentra 5301LN Augusta is also a Grade 2 cylindrical lever in passage/closet function, from the 5300 Series, and the Accentra 4601LN carries the same Grade 2 passage function in the 4600 Series with Augusta trim. The Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 cylindrical passage lever with a non-handed design, matching the S10, which is also non-handed. Any of the three covers the same interior opening: a latch that retracts from either side with no locking.
6) The spec on my drawing calls for a Grade 1 passage lever - what takes the place of the Schlage S10?
The S10 is built to Grade 2, so a Grade 1 spec needs a different lock. The Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 cylindrical passage lever, heavy duty, fire rated, with non-handed levers and a 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch door thickness range. The Falcon T101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty cylindrical passage lever with pressure release technology. The Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical passage/closet lever, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. Design Hardware X75 is a Grade 1 passage lever lockset with a flat lever for 1-3/4 inch doors.
7) I need the same lever on a restroom door that has to lock from the inside - what do I order instead of the S10?
The S10 keeps both levers always unlocked, so it will not secure a restroom. Within the Schlage S Series the privacy function is the S40 bath/bedroom. Outside the series, the Hager 2540 is a Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Arrow MK02-TA is a privacy cylindrical lock in the Tudor knob style with a fire rating. Kwikset 300BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 privacy lever for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Baldwin Estate 5103 is offered in a privacy lever with the 5048 rose.
8) The opening needs to lock with a key - which lever replaces a passage S10?
The S10 is non-keyed. The Schlage S Series keyed functions are the S70 classroom, S80 storeroom and S51 entrance, all in the same series with the same lever designs. Across brands, the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt, and the Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever in entry/office function. Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial entry lever for the same door range.
9) Can I use a dummy lever where a Schlage S10 passage set is called for?
No. The S10 is a cylindrical passage lock with a working latch - the 16-203 latch in 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset - so the lever retracts a bolt and holds the door closed. A dummy is fixed trim with no latch at all: the Schlage S170 single dummy trim, the BEST 7KC single dummy trim in Grade 2 medium duty, the BEST 9K 1DT single dummy trim in Grade 1 heavy duty, the Accentra 455LN Augusta Grade 1 single dummy, and the Callan Bentley Grade 2 dummy lever all fall in that group. Dummies suit an inactive leaf or a pull side; they will not latch a hall or closet door.
10) I am standardizing a building on one lever design - can I mix a passage lever with the locking functions on other doors?
Yes, if you stay inside one family. The Schlage S Series covers the S10 passage and S40 privacy on the non-keyed side and the S70 classroom, S80 storeroom and S51 entrance on the keyed side, with four lever designs and one matching rose across the range. Other families let you do the same: Hager runs 2510 passage, 2540 privacy, 2525 entrance and 2580 storeroom all on the Withnell lever in Grade 2, and Accentra offers the Augusta trim design across the 5301LN passage and the 455LN dummy. Matching the family keeps the rose and lever identical from door to door.
11) The opening is a fire-rated door - which passage lever should I be looking at?
The Schlage S10 is UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 feet by 8 feet. Among other passage levers, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage lock carrying a fire rating for 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 passage/closet lever with a fire rating for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. Confirm the door and frame label against the lock listing before you commit the order.
12) What is the difference between the S10 passage and the S170 dummy trim?
The S10 has a working latch. Turn the lever and the latchbolt retracts, so the door latches shut and stays closed. The S170 is single dummy trim: a lever fixed to the door with no latch and no mechanism, used as a pull on an inactive leaf or a closet door held by a ball catch or roller latch. If the door needs to hold itself shut, order the S10. If you just need a matching handle to pull on, dummy trim is the cheaper part. Dummy options from other brands include the BEST 7KC single dummy trim in Grade 2 and the BEST 9K 1DT in Grade 1.
13) What lever styles and finishes does the Schlage S10 come in?
Four lever designs, all pressure cast zinc on one matching rose: Flair, Jupiter, Neptune, and Saturn. Seven finishes across all four: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, and 626 satin chrome. If you are standardizing a building, pick the lever design and finish first, then order the same combination across the keyed S Series functions so the passage doors match the entrance and storeroom doors.
14) Is a Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage lever the same thing as a Schlage S10?
They perform the same latch function but are not built to the same standard. The Schlage S10 is a Grade 2 lever for commercial use with heat-treated steel locking components. The Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage lever is Grade 3, in passage/hall/closet function, for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch. The Callan Asheville is likewise a Grade 3 passage leverset. For a hotel corridor, office tenant space or apartment building interior, the S10 is the Grade 2 commercial part; the Grade 3 levers serve lighter residential-duty openings.
15) My doors are 2 inches thick - which Grade 2 passage lever covers that?
The Arrow GL01 is a Grade 2 passage cylindrical lock with a Sierra lever, non-keyed, rated for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. The Hager 2510 is a Grade 2 passage cylindrical lever with the Withnell design covering 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. For a thicker door still, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 passage lock covering 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. All three carry the same passage function as the Schlage S10, where both levers stay unlocked.
16) Is there a decorative passage lever that matches the S10 function for a hospitality interior?
The Schlage S10 comes in four lever designs - Flair, Jupiter, Neptune and Saturn - in cast zinc across seven finishes including 613 oil rubbed bronze and 619 satin nickel. If the look calls for something more ornamental, the Baldwin Estate 5103 passage lever with the 5048 rose carries the same passage/hall/closet function. Bravura offers passage leversets in Grade 2 as well: the Atlanta and Orlando with round trim, the Tampa with square trim, and the Miramar with round trim in US4 satin brass.
17) Does a keypad leverset do what a Schlage S10 does?
No. The S10 is a non-electronic, non-keyed passage lever - both levers are always unlocked and there is no credential to present. A keypad lever controls access by code: the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, and Emtek offers a Classic keypad leverset. Those belong on an opening you want to restrict, not on a hall or closet door where free passage is the point.
18) Can I add a keypad or card reader to the Schlage S10 later?
No. The S10 is entirely mechanical with no electrified option and no cylinder to swap, so there is nothing to wire or credential. If the opening needs access control, order an electronic set from the start. The Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, and the Lockey 1150 is a mechanical keypad lever set with double combination for 1-1/8 to 2 inch doors if you want code entry without power. For electrified fail safe cylindrical, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 runs 12VAC/DC.
19) Does the Schlage S10 meet federal FF-H-106C for a government building?
Yes, the S Series meets FF-H-106C, which is the federal specification institutional procurement offices reference on hardware submittals. It also meets or exceeds BHMA/ANSI A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2 and is UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 x 8 feet.
20) If I order Schlage S10 passage sets now, can I add keyed S Series locks later and keep them matching?
Yes, that is the point of specifying within one series. The S10 shares the same four lever designs, the one matching rose, and the same seven finishes as the keyed functions, so a corridor of passage doors and a run of S51 entrance or S80 storeroom doors read as one set of hardware. Order the same lever design and finish code across the functions. Split finishes and split styles are handled through the Sales Center and carry extended manufacturer lead times, so keep the order to a single finish per opening where you can.
