1) Will a Schneider EGB breaker plug into my panel, or does it have to be bolted in?
The EGB is a bolt-on breaker, not a plug-in. It mounts to the panelboard's bolt-on mounting pads, so the interior has to be built for bolt-on E-Frame breakers. If your panel takes plug-in breakers, the EGB will not seat in it.
2) Can I use an EGB breaker on a 480Y/277V system?
Yes, within the pole configuration. The 2-pole and 3-pole EGB breakers are rated 480Y/277 Vac, so they work on a solidly grounded 480Y/277V wye system. The 1-pole versions are rated 277 Vac only, which is a single phase to neutral of that same wye system. These are not for 480V delta (corner or ungrounded) service.
3) Is the EGB breaker suitable for a rooftop HVAC unit or refrigeration compressor feed?
That is what it's built for. The EGB carries an HACR rating, meaning it is acceptable for heating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment branch circuits where the nameplate calls for an HACR type breaker. Protection is thermal-magnetic, so the thermal element rides through motor inrush while the magnetic element handles short circuits.
4) Is the EGB interchangeable with EDB or EJB breakers?
All three sit in the same Schneider 125 A Frame family, EDB-EGB-EJB, and share the E-Frame bolt-on footprint.
