1) Will a Schneider QO 3-pole breaker fit in my existing panel?
The QO 3-pole breaker is a plug-in device, so it seats into QO load centers and panelboards that accept plug-on QO breakers. It takes 3 spaces in the panel, so you need three adjacent open poles on the bus. It will not plug into a Homeline or other manufacturer's bus - QO and Homeline are different footprints.
2) Can I use this QO breaker on a rooftop AC unit or a walk-in cooler condenser?
Yes. The QO 3-pole is HACR rated, which is the rating the equipment nameplate calls for on heating, air conditioning and refrigeration gear with multiple motor loads. It's a thermal-magnetic standard breaker, so it handles the running overload thermally and the short circuit magnetically.
3) Is a 3-pole QO breaker what I need, or should I be using a 2-pole?
Use the 3-pole where you're feeding a three-phase circuit - all three legs trip together. On single-phase 120/240V residential service a 2-pole QO is the right part; a 3-pole won't buy you anything and will eat an extra space. Check that your panel is actually a three-phase QO panelboard before ordering, since a standard single-phase residential load center has no third bus leg to land on.
4) How much room does the QO 3-pole breaker take up in the panel?
Plan on 3 breaker spaces. The body measures 2.24 in wide by 2.91 in deep, which matters if you're working in a shallow flush-mount can or trying to close a cover over the wire bending space.
5) Can this breaker be installed in a hot mechanical room or attic panel?
Operating ambient is rated to 40 degrees C (104 F). Above that, thermal trip curves shift and the breaker will nuisance trip early, so a panel sitting in an unventilated attic or beside boiler equipment needs the ambient checked before you size the circuit.
