Metallics JSRMO2 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the JSRMO2 screw stainless steel, and will it hold up outdoors or in damp locations?
It's 18-8 stainless steel, the common austenitic 300-series grade used where plain or zinc-plated steel would rust. That makes it suitable for damp interiors, exterior boxes and enclosures, and washdown areas. For salt-spray or marine exposure, 316 stainless is the better choice.
2) Do I need a nut or tapped hole to use the JSRMO2, or will it cut its own thread?
It needs mating threads. A machine screw has a blunt, non-tapping point, so the JSRMO2 goes into a 10-24 tapped hole, a 10-24 nut, or a threaded insert. If you're fastening into sheet metal with no threads, use a self-tapping or sheet metal screw instead.
3) How many screws come in a jar of Metallics JSRMO2?
One hundred screws per jar. Metallics ships this one in a jar pack rather than a loose box, which is what makes it practical to keep on a service van or in an MRO crib without the fasteners spilling into the drawer.
4) Will a 10-24 oval head Phillips screw work for mounting electrical device plates and covers?
Yes for 10-24 tapped hardware. The JSRMO2 is an electrical-trade machine screw in the 10-24 thread used on many box covers, plates, and enclosure doors. Note the head: oval head sits in a countersunk or formed hole and leaves a low rounded crown proud of the surface. If your cover has a flat, non-countersunk hole you want a round or truss head instead, and if it needs to sit perfectly flush you want a flat head.
5) Is a 1-1/2 inch length too long for standard device mounting?
For a typical plate or cover screw, yes. At 1-1/2 inches the JSRMO2 is a long machine screw, meant for deep stacks, extension rings, mud rings, fixture canopies, or where you're reaching through added thickness. For flush box-to-plate work the shorter 10-24 lengths are the usual pick, and excess length here will bottom out or stick through behind the device.
