The SDL10M carries a T-17 point, which is the self-drilling type auger tip cut into the end of the screw. It clears a path as it enters, so in most softwood decking and framing you drive straight without pre-drilling. Near a board end or in dense hardwood, a pilot hole is still the safer call to avoid splitting.

They use a star (Torx style) recess, not Phillips or square. Have the matching star bits on the gun before you start a deck run, since a 1,000 piece box goes fast and the star drive is what keeps the bit from camming out when you are sinking the bugle head flush.

The SDL10M is a single bulk configuration: #10 x 2 inch, 1,000 screws per box. There is no partial pack or alternate length under that part number, so if you need a different length or diameter you are ordering a different Metallics deck screw item.

A bugle head has a flared, curved underside that pulls itself flush into wood without tearing out the fibers around the hole, so the deck surface finishes clean and there is nothing proud to catch a bare foot or a snow shovel. It is the standard head for deck and subfloor fastening, as opposed to a flat countersunk head used in sheet goods and metal.
