Metallics SDL8B – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do I need to pre-drill for the SDL8B deck screw?
No. The SDL8B carries a T-17 point, which is a self-drilling type 17 auger tip that cuts its own pilot in wood and reduces splitting near board ends and edges. For hardwood decking or very dry stock, pre-drilling is still the safer call.
2) How many screws come in a box of Metallics SDL8B?
Each quantity of the Metallics SDL8B is a 10,000 piece bulk pack. That is a contractor or deck crew quantity, not a repair pack, so it suits framing and decking crews and MRO stockrooms standardizing on one fastener rather than a single small punch list.
3) Why is a bugle head screw used instead of a flat head on decking and trim?
The bugle head on the SDL8B has a flared, curved underside that pulls down into wood fibers and seats flush without needing a countersink, while spreading load so it is less likely to blow through softwood. A flat head with a sharp shoulder tends to tear the surface or sit proud in soft stock.
