The flat head seats flush in a countersunk hole, and the SMS thread is a self-threading sheet metal thread rather than a machine thread, so it bites directly into sheet metal, enclosure covers, and light-gauge channel.
2) Do I need a special bit to install hex pin tamper-resistant screws?
Yes. The TP507SFC has a hex socket with a pin in the center, so a standard hex key or hex bit will not seat. You need a pin-in-hex (hex pin) driver bit sized to the recess. That's the point of the fastener: once it's in, nobody removes the cover without the matching bit.
3) Will a #8 x 1-1/2 flat head screw sit flush, or will it stand proud of the cover?
The flat head is designed to sit flush, but only in a countersunk or dimpled hole. On a flat, un-countersunk sheet metal cover the tapered head will stand proud and may not pull tight. If your cover is punched flat without a countersink, you want a pan or truss head tamper screw instead of this flat head version.
4) Can I use the TP507SFC in a pre-drilled hole in wood or into a tapped machine thread?
No on the machine thread. SMS is a sheet metal thread, not a machine screw thread, so it will not run into a tapped 8-32 hole. It cuts its own thread in sheet metal or light-gauge steel, and at 1-1/2 inches it will also hold in wood blocking, though it is not a wood screw. If your application has an existing tapped hole, order a machine screw in the matching thread pitch instead.
