1) What does the SDC EHR3A extension rod actually do on a magnetic door holder?
The EHR3A is a 3 inch extension rod for an SDC magnetic door holder. It moves the holder's armature or magnet out from its mounting surface so the two halves meet flush when the door, in its held-open position, sits farther from the wall or floor mount than the holder alone can reach. It is a mounting accessory, not a holder itself, so you order it in addition to the magnetic door holder, not instead of one.
2) My magnetic door holder is mounted on the wall but the door does not quite reach it. Is an extension rod the fix?
That is exactly the gap an extension rod closes. The EHR3A adds 3 inches of reach so the armature meets the magnet face to face. Measure the actual gap between the holder face and the door in the open position first, because a rod that overshoots holds the door short of the wall and one that falls short still will not catch. If your gap is larger than 3 inches, you need a longer rod in the same family.
3) Will an SDC magnetic door holder extension rod work with a non-SDC access control panel?
Power and release come from the holder and the access control system, not the rod, and SDC states its magnetic locks and holders work with any access control system. The EHR3A is a mechanical standoff with no wiring of its own, so the control panel brand has no bearing on it.

Aluminum painted is the finish, which is the single option for the EHR3A. If the holder on the wall is a brass or bronze finish, the rod will not match visually, so plan on a painted aluminum look at the standoff.
