Steel City 638 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What exactly is the Steel City 638 floor plate assembly, and what does it do?
The Steel City 638 is a steel seating plate and floor plate assembly used as the flush service cover for a floor box, specifically the P64-DS/DU floor plate application. It is the part that sits at finished floor level over the box, not the box itself, so you still need the floor box and the device or receptacle underneath it.
2) Will a Steel City 638 plate work on a Wiremold OmniBox or a Pass & Seymour floor box?
No. The 638 is matched to the Steel City P64-DS/DU floor plate application and should be used with that Steel City floor box family. For an OmniBox installation the adapter plates are OmniBox-series parts such as the Wiremold 828MAAP audio/video adapter plate, and Pass & Seymour floor boxes take their own covers like the TM1542 series tamper-resistant brass cover. Floor box covers are not cross-brand interchangeable.
3) What is the difference between the Steel City 638 floor plate assembly and the Wiremold 828MAAP adapter plate?
They do different jobs. The Steel City 638 is a steel flush-service floor box cover sold as a seating plate / floor plate assembly, so it closes the box and carries the receptacle service opening. The Wiremold 828MAAP is an audio/video adapter plate in sheet metal from the OmniBox series, meant to mount A/V connectors rather than serve as the floor plate itself. If the need is power service at the floor, the 638 is the plate; if the need is terminating A/V jacks in an OmniBox, the 828MAAP is the adapter.
4) Is the Steel City 638 UL listed for electrical floor box service?
Yes. The 638 floor plate assembly carries UL file E2969.
5) Is the Steel City 638 made in the USA? We have domestic sourcing requirements on public work.
Country of origin on the 638 floor plate assembly is the United States, which is what institutional and government buyers with domestic-content requirements usually need documented.
6) Does the Steel City 638 come as a single piece or do I order it by the box?
It is sold each, so one order gets you one 638 seating plate and floor plate assembly. For a multi-outlet floor layout you order one per box location.
7) When I order the Steel City 638, what part number do I give my distributor?
Order it as Steel City model 638, manufacturer part number 638. The catalog description reads SEATING PLT P64-DS/DU FLR PLT ASSY, which is the same item.
