Steel City TC111A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What trade sizes do Steel City TC compression EMT connectors come in?
Nine trade sizes: 1/2 inch (TC111A), 3/4 inch (TC112A), 1 inch (TC113A), 1-1/4 inch (TC114A), 1-1/2 inch (TC115A), 2-1/2 inch (TC117A), 3 inch (TC118A), 3-1/2 inch (TC119A) and 4 inch (TC1110A). Note there is no 2 inch in that run, so if your run steps from 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 you will need a 2 inch fitting from another line. Each connector is sold individually, not bagged in fives or tens.
2) Do these connectors work with rigid conduit or only EMT?
EMT only. The TC series is an electrical metallic tubing connector, and the compression gland is sized to EMT's thinner wall and outside diameter. Rigid or IMC is threaded and takes a threaded coupling or a locknut-and-bushing termination, not a compression fitting.
3) Should I use a compression EMT connector or a setscrew connector?
Compression is the one to reach for when the connection needs to be mechanically tight and resist pull-out in commercial and industrial runs, which is what the Steel City TC series is built for. A compression gland grips the full circumference of the tubing rather than biting at one point like a setscrew. Setscrew fittings are the cheaper, faster choice for dry indoor branch work where pull-out is not a concern. Neither type is rated for direct burial or wet locations unless the fitting is specifically listed for it, and these are zinc-plated steel indoor/general purpose fittings.
4) Will a zinc-plated steel EMT connector hold up in a damp mechanical room or parking garage?
The zinc plating on the TC connectors gives corrosion resistance for general commercial and industrial environments, and the body is steel rather than die-cast zinc. For genuinely wet or washdown locations you want a fitting specifically listed as raintight or concrete-tight, so check the application listing rather than relying on the plating alone.
5) Does the Steel City EMT compression connector come with the locknut?
Each connector ships as a complete fitting with its compression nut and gland and the locknut for securing it to the enclosure, sold one per unit. What you supply on the job is the box or panel knockout itself, and an insulated throat means no separate bushing is needed to protect the conductors.
6) Can I standardize a whole facility on one EMT connector line across all conduit sizes?
Yes. The TC series runs from 1/2 inch up to 4 inch under a single UL file, E16592, with the same steel body and zinc plating throughout, so a facility or MRO buyer can spec one line for everything from branch runs to 4 inch feeders. The gap to watch is 2 inch, which is not part of the TC run.
7) What is the country of origin on Steel City TC connectors for a government or public-works submittal?
Steel City lists India and China as the manufacturing origins for the TC compression connector line. If your project carries a domestic-sourcing requirement, that is the detail to raise before the submittal goes in.
