Securitron DK-26SS – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Securitron DK-26 keypad fit on the narrow mullion of an aluminum storefront door?
That's what the DK-26 is built for. The keypad plate is 1-1/2 inches wide by 7 inches high by 7/8 inch deep, so it lands on a narrow stile or a mullion without overhanging the glass stop. All four orderable configurations are narrow stile. The electronics don't live behind the plate either, they sit in a separate 6 x 8 x 3 inch enclosure you mount elsewhere, which is why the keypad itself can be this slim.
2) What is the difference between the Securitron DK-26 and the DK-26P?
The DK-26 is the complete system, keypad plus controller. The DK-26P is the keypad only. Order the DK-26P when you already have a DK-26 controller in place and are replacing a damaged or vandalized keypad, or when you are adding a second reading point to an existing controller. If this is a new install with nothing on the door, you need the full DK-26 version, since the relay, code memory and REX input all live in the controller.
3) Can the Securitron DK-26 keypad be mounted outside in weather?
Yes, it's rated for outdoor use. The keypad is cast stainless steel with EPDM rubber keys and carries a keypad operating range of -22 to +158F (-30 to +70C). One thing that catches installers out: the CPU has a much narrower range, +32 to +158F (0 to +70C), so the controller enclosure has to go somewhere that stays above freezing. Keypad outside, controller inside.
4) Will the DK-26 run off my existing 12V access control power supply?
It takes 12V or 24V, AC or DC, so most existing access control supplies will drive it. Draw is 7 mA at rest and 160 mA active on 12V, or 20 mA at rest and 190 mA active on 24V. Size your supply for the lock current on top of that, since the DK-26 switches the lock through its own relay rather than passing power to it.
5) How far can the DK-26 controller be from the keypad?
Securitron supplies 16 ft (4.8m) of 12 conductor, 22 gauge cable with the keypad, so plan the enclosure within that run of the door unless you are splicing. Twelve conductors is more than a typical reader run, so don't substitute 4 or 6 conductor cable you have on the truck.
6) How many doors can one Securitron DK-26 keypad system control?
One or two doors, provided both doors share the same access needs. The 5A DPDT relay gives you two sets of contacts, which is where the two-door capability comes from. If the two openings need different codes or different schedules, that is two separate systems, not one.
7) How many user codes does the Securitron DK-26 hold?
59 users, and users can hold multiple entry codes. That covers a small office, a tenant amenity room or a mechanical space well enough. It's a standalone keypad, so codes are programmed at the unit rather than pushed from a head end. For a property with turnover in the hundreds you want credential-based access control instead, not a code-per-user keypad.
8) Can somebody figure out the code on a DK-26 by watching worn keys?
Less easily than on most keypads. The DK-26 runs true 10 digit operation, meaning the keys are not paired, so each digit is its own button and the code isn't reduced to a five-button pattern. It also has a hard code and user code disable feature and a Lockout Mode for shutting down entry after repeated bad attempts. Securitron rates it for medium to high security control of electric locks.
9) Can I hold a door unlocked during business hours with the Securitron DK-26?
Yes, it has a Passage Mode that holds the lock released, plus a Lockout Mode at the other end for shutting entry down. Both are entered at the keypad. There is also a Request to Exit input, so a push bar, motion sensor or exit push button releases the lock on the way out without a code.
10) What finishes does the Securitron DK-26 keypad come in?
Two: satin stainless steel (US32D/630) and black anodized. Both the full system and the keypad-only version are offered in either. US32D is the one to pick if you are matching existing 630 finish hardware on an aluminum entrance; black anodized matches dark bronze and black storefront framing.
11) Do I need a separate cover plate for the Securitron DK-26?
No, a cover plate ships with the system. Securitron also catalogs the digital keypad cover plate separately as the DK-CPSS, a 3 x 8 inch satin stainless plate, which is what you order when you are covering the prep left behind by a keypad you removed rather than buying a new system.
12) Does the Securitron DK-26 give any feedback when you press a key?
It has an audible keystroke echo plus 3 LEDs, so a user gets confirmation each digit registered rather than guessing. There's also a bell button on the keypad, which lets a visitor ring through at the same plate instead of you fitting a separate doorbell station beside it.
13) Is the Securitron DK-26 CE marked for a project spec?
It's CE marked to EN 50081-1 and EN 61000-6-2, the EMC emissions and immunity standards. Those are the listings Securitron publishes for the DK-26.
