SECURITRON DPS DOOR POSITION SWITCHES

Used to monitor the status of a door or to provide an initiate signal to Securitron®'s XDT delayed exit logic timers and DPA door prop logic timers.

DPS-W Concealed Door Position Switch for Wood Doors Both components require drilling a 3/4" [19mm] diameter hole in the door and frame directly opposite one another. The DPS-W style is a Normally Closed switch (SPST). The distance depends on the door type and gap between the door and frame but is in the 1/2"-3/4" [12-18mm] range. Includes a magnetic switch and a cylindrical permanent magnet.

DPS-M Concealed Door Position Switch for Metal Doors Both components require drilling a 3/4" [19mm] diameter hole in the door and frame directly opposite one another. The large magnet is needed to overcome the shielding effect of a steel door. The DPS-M style is a Normally Closed switch (SPST). The distance depends on the door type and gap between the door and frame but is in the 1/2"-3/4" [12-18mm] range. Includes a magnetic switch and a cylindrical permanent magnet.

Securitron DPS-M-BK – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I need the Securitron DPS-W or DPS-M door position switch for a hollow metal door?
Use the DPS-M on a hollow metal or steel door. The two Securitron DPS versions are not interchangeable: steel shields the magnetic field, so the DPS-M ships with a larger magnet to overcome that shielding effect. The DPS-W is the wood door version. Put a DPS-W in a steel door and the magnet may not hold the reed switch closed reliably across the gap. On a building with both door types, order DPS-W for the wood leaves and DPS-M for the hollow metal ones.
2) What size hole do I have to drill for a Securitron DPS concealed door position switch?
A 3/4 inch (19mm) diameter hole in the door and a matching 3/4 inch hole in the frame, drilled directly opposite one another. That is the same prep for both the DPS-W and the DPS-M. The switch body goes in one hole and the cylindrical magnet in the other, so once the door is hung nothing is visible on the face of the door or the frame face. Plan the bore location before hanging, because both holes have to line up across the gap.
3) How wide a gap between the door and frame will a Securitron DPS switch still read?
The switch and magnet work at a separation in the 1/2 to 3/4 inch (12 to 18mm) range, and the exact figure depends on the door type and the gap between door and frame. On a well hung door that is not a problem, but on a worn opening with a sprung leaf or a heavily built up frame, check the actual door to frame gap first. If the leaf sits further off than that at the switch location, the contact will read open with the door closed and your panel will show a false door-ajar.
4) Is the Securitron DPS a normally closed contact, and can I wire it straight to my alarm panel input?
Both DPS versions are normally closed, single pole single throw (SPST). The contact is held closed while the door is shut and the magnet is in position, and it opens as the leaf swings away, which is the standard supervised-loop arrangement most panels expect on a door contact zone. Switching current is 0.4A AC or DC maximum, so it is a signalling contact for a panel zone, an access control input, or a timer initiate. Do not run maglock or strike current through it, that load belongs on a relay.
5) Will a Securitron DPS switch trigger a Securitron XDT delayed egress timer or a DPA door prop timer?
Yes. Beyond plain door status monitoring, the DPS is used to provide the initiate signal to Securitron XDT delayed exit logic timers and DPA door prop logic timers. That is the normal way these get wired: the DPS tells the timer the door has moved off the frame, and the timer runs the delayed egress sequence or the prop alarm countdown. The DPS itself has no timing or logic of its own, it only reports position, so if you want prop alarm behaviour the timer is a separate piece you still need to order.
6) Can I use a Securitron DPS door contact on an exterior door or in an unconditioned space?
The operating temperature range is -40 to +150F (-40 to +65C), which covers exterior openings, unheated warehouse and parking structure doors, mechanical rooms, and walk-in freezer vestibules in most of North America. It is a commercial-duty device. Because it mounts concealed inside a bored hole in the door and frame, the switch body and magnet also sit out of the weather and out of reach of anyone working the opening from outside.
7) What comes with a Securitron DPS door position switch, and what else do I need to order?
Each DPS includes the magnetic switch and the cylindrical permanent magnet, so one part number covers both halves of the opening, the door side and the frame side. You supply the wiring back to the panel or timer and a 3/4 inch bit for the prep. If the switch is initiating delayed egress or prop alarm rather than just reporting status, the Securitron XDT or DPA timer is ordered separately. Buy one DPS per leaf, so a pair of doors needs two.
8) Should I use a concealed door position switch or a surface mounted door contact?
A concealed switch like the DPS is the right call where the contact needs to be out of sight and out of reach: it drops into a 3/4 inch hole bored in the door edge and the frame, so there is nothing on the face for a tenant to pick at, paint over, or defeat. The trade-off is prep. You have to drill the door and frame accurately and get the two holes opposite each other, which is easy on a new install or while a leaf is off its hinges and awkward on an occupied opening. Where you cannot bore the door, a surface mounted contact is the practical choice.
9) Will a Securitron DPS tell me if a door has been propped open?
Not on its own. The DPS reports door position only, closed or not closed, as a normally closed SPST contact. To turn that into a prop alarm you feed it to a Securitron DPA door prop logic timer, which is what holds the countdown and sounds off when the door stays off the frame too long. Same for delayed egress, where the DPS initiates a Securitron XDT delayed exit timer. Property managers chasing propped stairwell and service doors need the DPS plus the timer, not the switch alone.
10) Which part number do I order for a Securitron DPS in grey, and does the colour matter on a concealed switch?
Grey is DPS-M-GY for metal doors and DPS-W-GY for wood. Black and white are stocked in both versions too: DPS-M-BK, DPS-M-WH, DPS-W-BK and DPS-W-WH. The colour is on the visible face of the switch and magnet caps sitting flush in the bored holes, so pick whichever disappears against the door edge and frame rabbet, not the door face. On a fleet of openings, standardising on one colour per door type keeps the parts room simple.
