The EPT Electric Power Transfer provides concealed, secure power and data conduit between a frame and door, transmitting power to electrified locks, exit bars and more. Its durable stamped steel housing and flexible spring steel conduit make the EPT suitable for most types of swinging doors with butt or continuous hinges or pivot hinges up to 3/4" offset. The EPT-SC accommodates swing-clear hinges and most pivot hinges.

Securitron EPT – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Securitron EPT power transfer work on a door with pivot hinges?
Only some pivots. The EPT works on doors hung on butt hinges, continuous hinges, and offset pivot hinges up to 3/4 inch offset. It is not for center pivot doors, and not for pivot hinges with an offset greater than 3/4 inch. If the door is on swing clear hinges, or on most pivot hinges, order the EPT-SC version instead, which is built for those conditions.
2) What is the difference between the Securitron EPT and the EPT-SC?
Hinge type is the whole difference. The standard EPT covers butt hinges, continuous hinges, and offset pivots to 3/4 inch. The EPT-SC is the swing clear version, made for swing clear hinges and most pivot hinges, where the door edge moves away from the frame further than a standard butt hinge allows. Both are ordered with a 10 inch cord in swing clear form; the standard swing version is offered with either a 10 inch or an 18 inch cord.
3) Is the Securitron EPT power transfer allowed on a fire rated door?
Yes. The EPT and EPTL are UL 10C Listed and carry UL/cUL listing under Miscellaneous Fire Door Accessories, files GVUX.R21028 / GVUX7.R21028, with Underwriters Laboratories File R21028 covering UL 10B and UL 10C for EPT/EPTL and EL-EPT/EL-EPTL. It is also CAN4-S104 Listed for Canadian fire door work.
4) What does ElectroLynx mean when ordering a Securitron EPT, and do I need it?
ElectroLynx is the plug-and-play connector option. EL-EPT, EL-EPTL, and EL-EPT-SC come terminated with ElectroLynx connectors so the transfer plugs into an ElectroLynx-prepped electrified lock or exit device instead of being hard wired and spliced in the field. Order the plain EPT, EPTL, or EPT-SC if you are landing wires yourself. The ElectroLynx models are the ones carrying UL 634 and ULC/ORD-C634 listing, under UL File BP6799.
5) Does the Securitron EPT mortise into the door and frame, or surface mount?
It mortises. The EPT installs in the door edge and the frame edge, so the whole assembly is concealed when the door is closed and there is nothing exposed to attack or tampering in the gap. The housing is stamped steel, and the body is 7/8 inch high by 0.67 inch wide, which is what you are routing the prep for. Securitron publishes a template and separate installation instructions for the EPT/EPTL and the EPT-SC.
6) What is the closest equivalent to the Securitron EPT if I need a specific number of conductors through the door edge?
The Securitron EPT runs a flexible spring steel conduit with a 3/8 inch inside diameter between the frame edge and door edge, so the wire count is set by what you pull through it rather than by a fixed conductor pack. If you want a transfer that arrives with the conductors already defined, the BEST EPT-2 is a 2-conductor electric power transfer with armored flex conduit, the BEST EPT-5 is a 5-conductor unit with a stainless steel housing, and the BEST EPT-12C and Precision EPT-12C are 12-conductor units with quick connect. A single electrified strike or a lock with one power pair fits the 2-conductor style; an electrified lever lock reporting latch and request-to-exit status is where the 12-conductor units are aimed.
7) The door has swing clear hinges - which power transfer should I order?
Order the Securitron EPT-SC, the swing clear version, or EL-EPT-SC if you want it ElectroLynx ready. The standard EPT and EPTL cover butt hinges, continuous hinges and offset pivots up to 3/4 inch, and the SC version is what accommodates swing clear hinges and most pivot hinges. The comparable transfers - BEST EPT-2, BEST EPT-5, and the 12-conductor BEST and Precision EPT-12C units - are catalogued by conductor count and connection style rather than by a swing clear variant, so on a swing clear opening the EPT-SC is the direct answer. Note that no version of the EPT suits a center pivot door or a pivot offset greater than 3/4 inch.
8) Should I order the 10 inch or the 18 inch cord on the EPT?
Cord length is the EPTL question. The standard EPT ships with a 10 inch cord, and the EPTL is the long version with an 18 inch cord, which is what you want when the junction point in the frame or the device connection in the door sits further from the transfer location than a standard prep allows. Both lengths are available plain or with ElectroLynx connectors. The swing clear version is offered with the 10 inch cord.
9) Can a Securitron EPT be used on an exterior opening that has to meet windstorm requirements?
Yes. The EPT is Windstorm Listed to ANSI/SDI-BHMA A250.13 at plus/minus 60 PSF, so it can go into an electrified opening in a building where the door assembly has to hold a windstorm rating. It is a commercial, heavy duty rated device with a metal substrate.
10) I need to power an electrified exit device on an existing door. What do I run the wire through?
A concealed power transfer like the Securitron EPT is what carries power and data from the frame into the door leaf. It mortises into the frame edge and door edge and protects the wiring in a flexible spring steel conduit as the door swings, which is what keeps conductors from work hardening and breaking at the hinge line. It feeds electrified locks, electrified exit bars, and similar door mounted devices. Check the hinge type first: butt or continuous hinges are fine, center pivots are not.
11) What is an alternative to the Securitron EPT if I want a transfer that comes pre-wired with quick connects?
The Precision Hardware EPT-12C is the closest alternative if you want conductors already in the unit with a quick connect termination, at 12 conductors, which is the option to look at when a single opening is feeding a lock, a monitoring switch, and a request-to-exit contact off one transfer. BEST also builds the EPT-2 in 2 conductor and the EPT-5 in 5 conductor with a stainless steel housing. The Securitron EPT differs in approach: it is an empty 3/8 inch inside diameter steel conduit you pull your own wire through, so the conductor count is your choice rather than the manufacturer's.
12) Can I get any combination of long cord, swing clear, and ElectroLynx on the EPT?
No, not every combination is built. Securitron offers EPT, EPTL, EPT-SC, EL-EPT, EL-EPTL, and EL-EPT-SC, and the orderable models are the standard swing in 10 inch or 18 inch cord, swing clear in 10 inch cord, and ElectroLynx versions of standard swing in 10 inch or 18 inch and swing clear in 10 inch. A long cord swing clear is not a standard build. If your opening needs a combination that is not one of those, it has to go through the factory.
13) Is the BEST EPT-12C the same part as the Precision EPT-12C?
They are the same 12-conductor quick connect electric power transfer described under two brand names: BEST lists it as the Precision Hardware Inc (PHI) EPT-12C, and Precision lists it as the Precision Power Transfer, 12 conductor, quick connect. When you are matching an existing opening, either part number gets you the 12-conductor quick connect transfer. The Securitron EPT is a different item - a stamped steel housing with a flexible spring steel conduit that you route your own wire through, offered in standard and long cord lengths and in an ElectroLynx ready form.
14) I only need to power a single electrified strike - do I need the full Securitron EPT?
For a single low-conductor run, the simpler option is the BEST EPT-2, a 2-conductor electric power transfer with armored flex conduit - the conductors come defined, so there is nothing to spec on wire count. The Securitron EPT is the choice when you want one conduit path that can carry power and data for electrified locks and exit devices together, since its 3/8 inch inside diameter spring steel shield carries whatever bundle the opening needs, and it can be ordered ElectroLynx ready with 10 inch or 18 inch cord.
