Klein Tools 6944INS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Klein 6944INS screwdriver rated for live electrical work at 1000 volts?
Yes. The 6944INS carries a 1000V rated layer of orange impact and flame-resistant insulation and meets or exceeds ASTM F1505-16 and IEC 60900:2018, the two standards that govern insulated hand tools. Klein's own guidance still applies: de-energize wherever you can, keep the tool clean and dry, inspect it before every use, and never touch the uninsulated portion when it might contact an energized source.
2) Will a #2 square insulated screwdriver reach into tight terminal blocks on a panel?
That is what the slim tip is for. On the 6944INS the insulation runs flush with the #2 square tip rather than stopping short of it, so the driver drops into recessed and crowded terminal blocks without the insulation shoulder fouling the opening, and it reduces nicking of the insulation on the way in. The round shank is 4 inches, giving reach past the deadfront into the lug.
3) Can I use a standard screwdriver with a rubber handle instead of a 1000V insulated one?
No. A rubber or plastic grip is a comfort feature, not electrical protection. Only tools marked with the official international 1000-volt rating symbol and built to ASTM F1505 and IEC 60900 are intended for contact with an energized source, and the 6944INS is insulated to that spec over the full shank with the insulation carried right to the tip.
4) What tip does the Klein 6944INS take, and will it fit Robertson square-drive terminal screws?
It is a #2 square (Robertson) tip, which is the size used on most breaker lugs, device terminals and panel screws that take square drive. It will not serve for #1 or #3 square screws, and it is not a combination tip, so Phillips or slotted terminals need a separate driver.
5) Is the tip on this insulated Klein screwdriver magnetic?
No. The 6944INS tip is non-magnetic, so a loose square-drive screw will not hold on the end of it. If you want magnetic pickup, Klein's MAG2 magnetizer is listed as a compatible accessory for this driver.
6) How long is the Klein 6944INS overall, and will it fit in a tool pouch?
Overall length is 8.31 inches (21.1 cm), made up of a 4 inch round shank and a 4.31 inch handle. The handle is 1.25 inches in diameter, and the whole driver weighs 6.3 oz (54 g). That is a standard pouch or panel-bag size, not a stubby.
7) How do I tell this orange insulated driver apart from the others in the pouch without reading the shaft?
Klein puts Tip-Ident on the end of the handle, so the tip type and its orientation read off the butt of the driver while it is still in the pouch. The insulation is orange with a black Cushion-Grip rubber handle, which is Klein's visual marker for the 1000V insulated line.
8) What is the Klein 6944INS made of, and is it made in the USA?
Steel shank and tip with a plastic and rubber handle assembly, carrying the orange insulation layer. Klein lists it as Made in USA.
