Spears 409-015 1-1/2 PVC Schedule 40 90° Street Elbow, Spigot x Socket

The Spears 409-015 is a 1-1/2 PVC Schedule 40 90° street elbow built with a spigot x socket (SPIGOTXSOC) connection configuration. Molded from PVC, this fitting is designed to redirect a 1-1/2 pipe run through a full 90° turn while keeping the joint compact and low-profile. The spigot end is sized to insert directly into the socket of an adjoining fitting, valve, or pipe hub, which streamlines assembly by removing the need for a separate coupling at that joint. The remaining socket end accepts a length of 1-1/2 PVC pipe for a secure, close-fitting connection. Manufactured to Schedule 40 dimensional standards, the 409-015 is engineered to mate reliably with other Schedule 40 PVC pipe and fittings in the same trade size, giving installers a dependable, code-familiar option for PVC piping layouts.

Key Features

  • Trade Size: 1-1/2, sized to connect directly with 1-1/2 PVC Schedule 40 pipe and fittings.
  • Durable PVC Construction: molded PVC material resists corrosion, rust, and chemical attack, supporting long service life compared to metallic fittings.
  • Schedule 40 Rated: dimensioned to Schedule 40 standards so it fits consistently with other Schedule 40 PVC pipe and fittings in the same size.
  • Street Elbow (Spigot x Socket) Configuration: one end is a spigot that inserts directly into a mating fitting, valve, or pipe socket, while the opposite end is a socket that accepts a length of pipe, eliminating an extra coupling at the joint.
  • 90° Elbow Angle: delivers a full 90° directional change in the pipe run for routing PVC lines around obstructions or between vertical and horizontal runs.
  • Lightweight Design: PVC construction is lighter than metal fittings, easing handling and installation.
  • Model 409-015: identified by Spears model number 409-015 for straightforward cross-referencing and reordering.

Spears 409-007 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between a PVC street elbow and a regular 90 degree elbow?
A regular 90 socket elbow has two sockets, so joining it straight to another fitting needs a short pipe nipple between them. The Spears 409 street elbow has one spigot end and one socket end, so the spigot slides directly into the socket of an adjoining fitting, valve, or pipe hub. That kills a joint and keeps the turn tight where space is short. The socket end still takes a length of Schedule 40 PVC pipe.
2) Is this street elbow solvent welded or threaded?
Solvent weld. Both ends of the Spears 409 are plain PVC socket-and-spigot, no threads, so the joint is made with PVC primer and solvent cement. There is no NPT end on this fitting, so if you need to transition to threaded pipe you will need a separate male or female adapter.
3) Can I use this PVC street elbow on a hot water line?
No. The 409 is molded PVC, which is for cold water and ambient temperature service. For hot water distribution you need CPVC, not PVC. It is suited to cold water distribution, irrigation, process piping and plumbing rough-in.
4) Can I glue a 1-1/2 inch street elbow directly into a PVC ball valve socket?
Yes, that is what the spigot end is for. The 1-1/2 inch 409-015 spigot is sized like 1-1/2 inch Schedule 40 pipe, so it solvent welds straight into the socket of a 1-1/2 inch valve, hub, or fitting with no coupling or nipple in between. Just make sure you have room to turn the elbow to the angle you want before the cement sets.
5) What trade sizes does the Spears 409 PVC street elbow come in?
Five sizes: 3/4 inch (409-007), 1 inch (409-010), 1-1/2 inch (409-015), 2 inch (409-020) and 3 inch (409-030). Each one mates with Schedule 40 PVC pipe and fittings of the same trade size, so pick the size by the pipe run, not by the fitting you are tying into.
6) Will a Spears 409 street elbow fit Schedule 80 PVC pipe?
The 409 is dimensioned to Schedule 40 standards. Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC share the same outside diameter at a given trade size, so the socket will accept Schedule 80 pipe of the matching size; Schedule 80 has a thicker wall and smaller bore, which lowers the flow area but does not change the fit. If the system is specified Schedule 80 throughout for pressure reasons, use a Schedule 80 fitting instead of this one.
7) Is a PVC street elbow OK to use as electrical conduit?
Plumbing PVC fittings and PVC electrical conduit fittings are different product lines and are not interchangeable for code purposes. The Spears 409 is a plumbing-department pressure fitting for PVC piping systems. For a conduit run, buy fittings listed for electrical conduit use.
8) Where are the socket depth and laying length dimensions for the Spears Schedule 40 street elbow?
Spears publishes the full Schedule 40 fitting dimension and weight tables, and ZenSupply carries those documents with the 409 elbow: the PVC Schedule 40 fittings dimensions and weights sheet, the Schedule 40 dimensions sheet, and the Schedule 40 brochure. Use those for socket depth, center-to-end and laying length when you are dimensioning a rough-in.
