Intermatic FD32H – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Intermatic FD32H spring wound timer need a neutral wire in the box?
No neutral is required. The FD32H is a mechanical spring wound timer, so it needs no electricity to run the timing mechanism, which is what makes it a drop-in for older switch boxes that only have a hot and a switch leg. That also means it keeps timing through a power outage.
2) Will the FD32H fit in a standard single-gang switch box with a decorator plate?
Yes. The FD32H replaces any standard or decorator style single-gang or multi-gang wall switch, and the device measures 4.125 by 1.75 by 1.25 inches. It takes a decorator (rocker style) opening in the wall plate, not a toggle opening.
3) Can I run this timer on a 277 volt lighting circuit in a commercial building?
Yes. The FD32H is rated 125-277 VAC at 50/60 Hz, so it works on 120V residential circuits and on 277V commercial lighting branch circuits off a 480/277 system. The same part covers both, which is useful if you are standardizing timers across a mixed facility.
4) Will the FD32H timer work with LED and CFL fixtures, or only incandescent?
It handles incandescent, fluorescent, CFL and LED loads. Because it is a mechanical spring wound switch that simply makes and breaks the circuit rather than electronically dimming or sensing the load, lamp type is not a limitation the way it is with electronic timers.
5) What happens at the end of the timing cycle, and does this model have a hold position?
The FD32H breaks the circuit when the dial winds down to zero, cutting the load. It is the without-hold version, so there is no permanent-on detent. If you need the ability to leave the load on indefinitely, you need a hold-feature spring wound timer instead.
6) How long will this spring wound timer run, and can it be set for shorter periods?
Maximum run is 2 hours. The dial is turned to whatever portion of that range you want, so shorter intervals are set by how far you wind it. For a bathroom exhaust fan or a stairwell light, two hours is the ceiling on any single wind.
7) What does SPDT mean on this countdown timer, and can I use it for a three-way application?
SPDT means single-pole double-throw: there is a common plus two contacts, so one load can be switched off while a second is switched on at the same point in the cycle. That is not the same as a residential three-way travelling switch pair, and it is not intended as a replacement for one. For a single load, wire the common and the normally-open contact.
8) Is the Intermatic FD32H suitable for switching an exhaust fan or a motor load?
Yes, it is listed for air movement and ventilation and for motor control, along with indoor and outdoor lighting control. Typical uses are bathroom and utility exhaust fans, heat lamps, and lights you do not want left running.
9) Will the ivory FD32H match the other devices on my wall plates?
The FD32H is ivory, decorator style. If your receptacles and switches are white or light almond, the color will read differently side by side in the same gang, so match the gang you are installing into rather than assuming ivory blends.
10) How are the wires connected on this Intermatic timer, and how hard is the install?
Connections are up front with teeter-type terminals, so you land the conductors on the face of the device rather than fishing leads around the back. For a crew swapping out timers across many rooms, that is the part that saves time on each box.
