Stanley Security QED312 36 689 LC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Stanley QED312 rim exit device fit a 32 inch door, or do I have to order an exact size?
The QED312 comes in 36 inch and 48 inch device lengths, and the 36 inch device is field sizable down to a 32 inch door (91.44cm to 81.28cm). So a 32 to 36 inch opening is covered by the 36 inch device, cut on site. Order the 48 inch device for wider leaves. The push bar is not something you guess at once it is cut, so measure the door width before you trim.
2) Do I need to order the Stanley QED312 handed, left or right?
No handing to specify. All QED300 series exit devices ship non-handed and are field reversible, so one part covers a left hand or right hand opening and you can stock a single device across a building instead of two.
3) What is the difference between the QED311, QED312 and QED313 rim devices?
All three are rim devices that latch into a strike on the frame at the lock edge. The QED311 uses hex key dogging, the QED312 uses cylinder dogging (a keyed cylinder holds the pushbar retracted so the door stays push-pull during business hours, and only a keyholder can set or release it), and the QED313 is the fire rated version, which is why it has no dogging at all. Pick the QED312 when you do not want maintenance staff carrying an Allen wrench to unlock the lobby. If the opening is a labeled fire door, you cannot use the 312.
4) Does the Stanley QED312 come with the cylinder, and what keyways can I get?
Cylinder dogging needs a cylinder, and the keyway is an ordering choice: BF-SFIC "F", KW-Kwikset, WE-Weiser, SC-Schlage, GA-Yale, LA-Sargent, or LC for less cylinder. The device takes a conventional cylinder. If you are keying into an existing masterkey system, order LC and supply your own cylinder in the system keyway. Ordering LC and forgetting the cylinder leaves you with a device you cannot dog.
5) What trim do I order with the Stanley QED312 to get a keyed lever on the outside?
The exit device handles the egress side; the outside trim is a separate selection. Trim comes in Sierra, Summit and Slate styles. Escutcheon trim is offered in dummy, passage, keyed and night latch functions, and pull plate trim in dummy, thumb-piece, night latch and flat plate. For a keyed lever that lets staff in from outside, take the keyed escutcheon; for an entrance that stays pull only, the flat plate or dummy. Night latch is the one for an after-hours service door where the key retracts the latch momentarily.
6) What is the closest Grade 1 rim exit device to the Stanley QED312 if a fire-rated opening is involved?
The QED312 is the cylinder dogging rim device in the Stanley QED300 line, and dogging is not permitted on a fire door, so the fire-rated opening calls for a different device. The Delaney F9000 Series 693302 is a Grade 1 fire rated heavy duty rim device sized for a 48 inch door. Within the QED line itself the fire-rated rim function is the QED313, which carries a fire-rated stainless steel strike with a stainless steel roller. Both remain Grade 1 rim devices, so the panic hardware footprint and the push-pad operation stay familiar to the installer.
7) The Stanley QED312 needs a 3-7/8 inch stile. What Grade 1 rim device fits a wide stile aluminum door instead?
The QED300 series is built to a 3-7/8 inch minimum stile width, which is a narrow stile dimension. On a wide stile door the pushpad geometry changes, and the Accentra 1800 Series 1800-36 and 2100 Series 2100 36 are both Grade 1 rim exit devices designed for wide stile doors in a 36 inch length, as is the Accentra 6100ED with its wide stile pushpad. The Accentra 6200 Series 6200 36 goes the other direction with a narrow stile pushpad and a Pullman latch. Confirm the stile face dimension on the door before committing, since a wide stile device will not lay out on a narrow stile rail.
8) Is there a simpler Grade 1 rim device than the Stanley QED312 for a 36 inch door where keyed dogging is not needed?
Cylinder dogging on the QED312 lets a keyholder hold the latch retracted with a key, which matters when the person dogging the door is not the person holding the hex wrench. If that control is not needed, the Delaney 8000 Series 8000-36 is a Grade 1 rim type device built for a 36 inch door, and the Accentra 6100ED is a Grade 1 rim exit device with a wide stile pushpad and hex key dogging. Hex key dogging is also offered in the QED line as the QED311. All four are Grade 1 rim devices; the difference is whether the dogging is keyed, hex, or absent.
9) Do the Accentra 1800, 2100 and 6200 rim devices substitute for the Stanley QED312 on a keyed outside lever opening?
They do not, and this is the substitution that gets caught on site. The Accentra 1800-36, 2100 36 and 6200 36 are all Grade 1 rim exit devices with a product function of exit only, meaning egress from the inside with no keyed entry from the outside. The QED300 platform pairs the rim device with outside trim, including keyed escutcheon and night latch options in Sierra, Summit and Slate styles, and the QED312 uses a conventional cylinder in keyways such as SFIC "F", Kwikset, Weiser, Schlage, Yale, Sargent, or supplied less cylinder. If the opening requires anyone to get back in through that door with a key, an exit only device is the wrong part regardless of matching grade.
10) Which Grade 1 rim exit device works on a wood door if the Stanley QED312 is being cross-shopped?
The QED300 series is stated for light commercial applications including wood, steel, or aluminum doors, and comes with wood and machine screws standard with sex bolts optional. Among the Accentra 1800, 2100, 6100ED and 6200 devices and the Delaney 8000, 9000 and F9000 devices, none are listed as wood door compatible, so a wood leaf points back to the QED platform. On a wood door specify the fastener package deliberately, since thru bolting is what holds a panic device to a wood leaf under repeated use.
11) Will the Stanley QED312 latch into the strike that is already on my frame?
The latch bolt is stainless steel with a 3/4 inch throw (19mm), and the device ships with its own stainless steel strike body with plated steel roller. Rim strikes are device specific, so plan on mounting the supplied strike rather than reusing what is on the frame; the existing rim strike from another maker is unlikely to line up with the 2-1/4 inch backset. On a steel frame that means new screw holes at the lock edge.
12) Can the QED300 rim exit device go on a wood door, or is it steel and aluminum only?
Wood, steel and aluminum are all in scope for the QED300 series, and wood screws plus machine screws come standard so you are covered either way. Sex bolts are optional and are standard on the fire rated device. On a wood door, thru bolting is what keeps the pushbar from working loose under traffic, so specify sex bolts.
13) Is the Stanley QED312 exit device Grade 1, and how many cycles is it rated for?
Grade 1, BHMA/ANSI certified, and tested past the 500,000 cycles that Grade 1 certification requires. For a facility standardizing across entries, that is the same grade level as the Accentra 1800, 2100, 6100ED and 6200 Series rim devices and the Delaney 8000 and 9000 Series, all Grade 1 rim devices. The QED300 also uses a thru bolt design.
14) Can I keep the door unlocked during business hours with the Stanley QED312 without leaving a wrench on site?
That is what cylinder dogging is for. On the QED312 a key turn holds the pushbar depressed and the latch retracted, so the door is free push-pull all day, and only someone with the key can dog or undog it. The hex key version, the QED311, does the same thing with an Allen wrench, which anyone who finds the wrench can operate. For a tenant space where staff open and close daily, cylinder dogging is the one that survives the routine.
15) What rim exit device should be used instead of the Stanley QED312 when the exit door also needs a local exit alarm?
The QED312 is a mechanical rim device with cylinder dogging and no alarm function. For an opening where unauthorized use of the exit needs to sound at the door, the Delaney 9000 Series 9000-36ALC is a Grade 1 heavy duty rim type device for a 36 inch door supplied with an alarm kit and a "C" cylinder. It is not fire rated, so it belongs on the same non-rated openings the QED312 suits. Both are Grade 1 rim devices, so the exit function and the door prep concept carry over.
16) For a 48 inch opening, how does the Stanley QED312 compare with the Delaney 693302?
Both cover a 48 inch door. The QED312 is offered in a 48 inch 4 foot device in 689 painted aluminum and 690 painted duranodic bronze, and the QED300 series is field sizable, cutting down for a 36 inch to 32 inch door application. The Delaney F9000 Series 693302 is a Grade 1 fire rated heavy duty rim device for a 48 inch door in a stainless steel finish. The deciding factors are the fire rating and the finish family: aluminum or bronze paint to match storefront trim, or stainless to match a stainless push and pull package.
17) What finishes does the Stanley QED300 exit device come in, and will it match the rest of my hardware?
Two finishes: 689 painted aluminum and 690 painted duranodic bronze. Both are offered on the 36 inch and 48 inch devices. 689 is the usual match for clear anodized aluminum storefront, 690 for dark bronze frames. The series is styled to harmonize with other commercial hardware, so on a building already running painted aluminum trim it will read the same across openings.
