The PST100 is a non-insulated steel cable staple sized 1-1/4 by 9/16 inches for NM (nonmetallic-sheathed) cable. The 9/16 inch crown is what decides fit: it straddles the flat width of typical two-conductor-with-ground NM-B, so the sheath sits under the crown without being crushed. Flat NM wider than 9/16, larger multi-conductor runs, or two cables stacked under one staple will not seat properly, and you want a wider crown staple for those.

A non-insulated staple is bare steel, crown and legs both. An insulated staple carries a plastic or fiber saddle across the crown that spreads the clamping load over the cable jacket. Bare steel staples like the PST100 are the standard, faster choice for framing-stage NM runs where the installer controls how far the staple is driven. If you are stapling cable that a jobsite crew will drive home with a framing hammer, or you want extra margin against nicking the sheath, an insulated staple is the more forgiving pick. Electrically neither one is a conductor path; the difference is jacket protection during install.

The PST100 ships as a 5,000-piece pail, and 5,000 each is the order minimum, so a pail is the smallest unit sold. Metallics does make this staple in other sizes and quantities on request, so if you need a smaller box or a different crown width for a rough-in, ask rather than assuming the pail is the only configuration.

If the staples already in your walls are plain steel with a rounded crown roughly 9/16 inch across and legs about 1-1/4 inch, the PST100 is the same class of fastener and will match visually and functionally on additional runs. What it will not match is an insulated staple, which shows a colored plastic saddle over the crown, or a wide-crown staple used on larger multi-conductor cable. Pull one existing staple and measure the crown before ordering a 5,000-piece pail for a fleet of units.

A full pail runs 35.9 pounds and measures 12 inches long by 12 inches wide by 10.5 inches high. That is a one-hand carry up a ladder for most people but a real load on a cart if you are staging several, and it fits a standard van shelf without decanting. Mechanically a 1-1/4 by 9/16 inch steel staple will hold small-diameter cable, but a bare metal staple driven over a thin-jacketed alarm, thermostat, or Cat cable is easy to overdrive, and crushing the jacket on data cable changes its performance. The PST100 is built as an NM cable staple. For structured cabling and low voltage, use a cable clip or an insulated staple sized to that jacket.
