Steel City WA 121 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does a 3/4 to 1/2 reducing washer actually do in a conduit run?
It lets you land 1/2 inch rigid or IMC conduit in a 3/4 inch knockout or box opening. The Steel City WA 121 washer fills the gap between the larger hole and the smaller fitting so the conduit hub or locknut seats properly instead of pulling through the oversized opening. It is a steel washer, not a fitting in its own right, so you still need the conduit's own locknut or bushing to make up the connection.
2) Do I need one reducing washer or two per opening?
Reducing washers are normally installed as a pair, one on each side of the sheet metal, so the conduit is centered and the knockout is closed off from both faces. That is why the Steel City washer is offered in a 2 piece pack (WA121-2) as well as singles. Count two per penetration when you are figuring quantities.
3) What pack quantities does the Steel City WA121 reducing washer come in, and which part number is which?
Four pack sizes: single piece as WA 121, a 2 piece as WA121-2, a 4 piece as WA121-4, and a 250 piece contractor pack as WA121-250CP. Since these get used two per opening, the 4 piece covers two penetrations and the 250 piece pack is the one to quote for panel and gutter work where you are stepping down a lot of knockouts.
4) Can I use the 3/4 to 1/2 reducing washer to go the other direction, 1/2 up to 3/4?
No. A reducing washer only steps a larger opening down to a smaller conduit, in this case a 3/4 inch knockout taking 1/2 inch rigid or IMC. If your knockout is 1/2 inch and the conduit is 3/4, you have to enlarge the hole with a knockout punch or step bit, or pick a different opening on the enclosure.
5) Will a steel reducing washer hold up in a damp or outdoor enclosure?
The washer is steel, and Steel City reducing washers are supplied with a plated finish for corrosion resistance in general indoor and dry-location work. A reducing washer is not a sealing device, so it does not make a raintight or wet-location connection on its own. For a rated enclosure, use a hub or a raintight fitting sized to the opening rather than relying on washers.
6) Is this a Steel City part or a Thomas and Betts part? I have both on my spec.
Both names apply to the same washer. It is catalogued by Steel City, and the WA121 series spec data is published under Thomas and Betts, which now carries the Steel City conduit fitting line. Ordering to WA 121, WA121-2, WA121-4, or WA121-250CP gets you the same item either way.
