Steel City 5402 LR – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the 5402 LR octagon cover accept a duplex receptacle?
It is punched for a single duplex receptacle, so you can mount a standard duplex device to a 4 inch octagon box with it. If you need a blank closure plate instead, the Mulberry 11700 galvanized steel oval/round blank cover is the blank-style option.
2) I need to cover a 4 inch octagon box with no device in it - is the Steel City 5402 LR the right part?
No. The Steel City 5402 LR is a flat steel octagonal cover punched for a duplex receptacle, so it leaves an opening where the device mounts. For a closed box with nothing installed, use a blank cover instead - the Mulberry 11700, part of the F-35 Series, is a galvanized steel oval/round blank cover with no device cutout. Keep the 5402 LR for the boxes that actually carry a duplex receptacle.
3) Can this steel octagon cover be used in a damp or unfinished area like a garage or basement?
The 5402 LR is steel with a pre-galvanized finish, which gives it corrosion resistance suitable for dry and typical unfinished interior locations such as basements, garages, and utility rooms. It is not a weatherproof or gasketed cover, so for wet exterior locations use a listed weatherproof cover and box instead.
4) For a facility standardizing on UL listed octagon box covers, how does the Steel City 5402 LR compare to the RACO 894KH?
The Steel City 5402 LR carries UL E2969 and is made in the United States, in steel with a pre-galvanized finish, sized 4 inches for octagon boxes. The RACO 894KH covers the same 4 in. octagon box footprint but is a KWIK-HANG Series round swivel cover rather than a flat duplex plate, so it serves a different mounting purpose on the same box. A standardization package usually carries both: the 5402 LR at receptacle locations and a swivel cover where that style is called for.
5) What finish and color is the 5402 LR cover, and will it match other galvanized device covers on the job?
Pre-galvanized steel, silver in appearance. It matches the look of other pre-galvanized steel outlet box hardware, which is what matters when you are standardizing exposed covers across a building and nobody is painting them.
6) Is the Steel City 5402 LR made in the USA?
Yes, country of origin is the United States. That matters on public and institutional work carrying domestic sourcing requirements.
