Steel City 54C1 RD – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Steel City 54C1 cover fit a standard 4 inch octagon ceiling box?
Yes. The 54C1 is a 4 inch octagonal steel cover made to close off a 4 inch octagon outlet box. It is flat and blank, so it seals the box completely with no openings for a fixture stem or device.
2) Does the Steel City 54C1 octagon cover have a center knockout for a fixture or wiring?
No. It has zero knockouts. It is a blank plate, intended for closing an unused or junction-only box. If you need to bring a fixture stud, stem, or cable through the cover, this is not the part, you want a cover with a center hole or a fixture-support cover such as the RACO 894KH round swivel cover for octagon boxes.
3) Can I use a Steel City 54C1 to close out an abandoned junction box in a ceiling?
That is exactly what a flat blank octagon cover is for. Splices stay accessible inside the box, the steel plate keeps them enclosed, and nothing passes through because there are no knockouts. Pre-galvanized steel construction holds up in dry and damp interior locations; it is not a gasketed weatherproof cover.
4) Is the RACO 894KH a drop-in substitute for a Steel City 54C1 on a ceiling box I just want closed off?
No. Both fit 4 inch octagon boxes, but they do different jobs. The 54C1 is a flat blank with no knockouts, which is what you want when the box is being closed off and left flush. The RACO 894KH is a round swivel cover, so it is built to pivot rather than to serve as a plain blank closure. For a box you simply want sealed, specify the 54C1.
5) Which 4 inch octagon blank cover should I standardize on for a building full of abandoned ceiling boxes?
The Steel City 54C1 is the simplest option to standardize on: flat, blank steel with zero knockouts, pre-galvanized finish, and UL E2969, sold each. It also comes in a red version if your facility uses red to flag fire alarm or emergency circuit boxes. The comparable RACO 894KH covers the same 4 inch octagon box but is a swivel-style round cover, which is a different part than a plain blank.
6) Is the Steel City 54C1 sold individually or in a box of covers?
The selling unit is each, so you can order the exact count for a job rather than a carton quantity.
7) Will the Steel City 54C1 cover match the galvanized boxes already in my building?
The finish is pre-galvanized steel, the same finish used on standard steel octagon outlet boxes, so it blends with existing galvanized ceiling boxes. If you are standardizing a building, the standard steel version is the one to stock; keep red only where fire alarm boxes need to be identified.
