Steel City BU 507 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What conduit sizes do the Steel City BU insulated bushings come in?
Two trade sizes: 2-1/2 inch (BU 507) and 4 inch (BU 510). Order by the trade size of the rigid or IMC conduit you are terminating, not by the outside diameter of the pipe.
2) Will a Steel City BU bushing thread onto IMC as well as rigid conduit?
Yes. The BU insulated bushings are made for both rigid metal conduit and IMC, which share the same threading in a given trade size, so a 2-1/2 inch or 4 inch bushing runs onto either.
3) Is the Steel City BU 510 bushing plastic or metal?
Non-metallic. It is a molded insulating bushing, so it protects conductor insulation at the conduit end but does not carry ground continuity itself. If the raceway needs bonding at that termination, use a metallic grounding bushing instead.
4) Can I use a non-metallic insulated bushing instead of a grounding bushing on a service feeder?
No. The BU bushings are non-metallic, so they provide insulation at the conduit throat but no bonding path. Where a bonding jumper has to land at the raceway termination, such as service equipment, you need a metallic grounding bushing with a lay-in lug. Use the non-metallic BU where bonding is handled elsewhere.
5) What is an insulated conduit bushing actually for?
It threads onto the end of a rigid or IMC conduit inside a box, enclosure, or gutter and gives conductors a smooth, insulated bearing surface to pass over instead of a bare cut thread. On large sizes like 2-1/2 inch and 4 inch, where conductors are heavy and get pulled hard, that insulated throat is what keeps the pull from nicking the insulation.
6) Do I still need a locknut if I use a Steel City BU bushing?
Yes. The BU is a bushing only, nothing else is supplied with it. Conduit entering a box is secured with locknuts on the outside (and inside where required), and the insulated bushing goes on last as the conductor-bearing surface. Buy locknuts in the matching 2-1/2 inch or 4 inch trade size separately.
7) Which part number do I order for 4 inch rigid conduit?
BU 510 is the 4 inch insulated bushing for rigid and IMC. For 2-1/2 inch conduit the part is BU 507.
