Steel City BU502-2 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use the BU502 insulated bushing on EMT?
No. The BU502 is threaded for rigid and IMC conduit, so it will not thread onto EMT, which is unthreaded. For EMT you need an insulated throat connector or a set-screw/compression connector with an insulated throat.
2) I need to bond the conduit at the enclosure. Is this bushing the right part?
No. The BU502 is a plain non-metallic insulating bushing with no bonding provision. If the installation calls for a bonding jumper at the raceway termination, you need a grounding bushing with a lug, not this one.
3) What does NM mean on the Steel City BU502 bushing?
NM here is the non-metallic insulating material of the bushing body. The BU502 is an all non-metallic insulated bushing rather than a metal bushing with an insulated liner, so it is not a bonding component and does not provide a lug for a bonding jumper.
4) What does the insulated bushing on a 3/4 inch conduit actually do?
It caps the cut conduit end with a smooth insulating throat so conductors pulled through the raceway are not abraded by the metal thread edge. On rigid and IMC runs, code practice is to fit an insulating bushing wherever conductors leave the conduit into a box or enclosure. The BU502 covers 3/4 inch trade size.
