Thomas & Betts CWN-25 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use the CWN-25 box with NM/Romex cable, or do I need to run conduit?
It is built for non-metallic sheathed cable. The box has integral non-metallic (C-5) cable clamps and two cable knockouts in the bottom, so Romex lands and clamps inside the box without a separate connector. If you need conduit instead, there is one 1/2 inch conduit knockout in the bottom and one 1/2 inch on each side.
2) Is the CWN-25 an old work box for cutting into existing drywall, or a new construction box?
It is an old work box, meaning it is intended for retrofit into an existing finished wall rather than nailing to a stud before the drywall goes up. The RACO 517 TIGER GRIP gangable steel switch box is another old work option if you want a different clamping style.
3) Can I gang two Thomas & Betts CWN-25 boxes together to make a two-gang opening?
No. The CWN-25 is welded construction, so the sides are fixed and it cannot be ganged. For a box you can gang up to multiple devices, look at the RACO 517 or RACO 518S gangable steel switch boxes, or the Steel City Adjust-A-Box LXWOWC-25, all of which are gangable.
4) I need a single-gang box with more wiring volume than 14 cubic inches - what should I use instead of the CWN-25?
The CWN-25 is a 14 cu. in. welded steel box. If the device count and conductor fill need more room, the Allied Moulded P-181 FlexBox is a 1-gang thermoplastic switch/receptacle box rated 18 cu. in. That is a non-metallic body rather than galvanized steel, so you lose the steel box's metal enclosure and the integral non-metallic cable clamp arrangement of the CWN-25, but you gain four cubic inches of fill for crowded splices.
5) What should I order instead of the CWN-25 if the job calls for a two-gang switch box?
The CWN-25 is a single-gang box, 3 in. long by 2 in. wide, and because it is welded it cannot be ganged into a two-device assembly. For two devices in one opening, the Allied Moulded 2302-NKV is a fiberglass reinforced 2-gang electrical switch box. Alternatively, a gangable steel box such as the Steel City Adjust-A-Box LXWOWC-25 is a 1-gang gangable box in pre-galvanized steel that can be joined with a second section.
6) Will a 2-3/4 inch deep steel switch box fit in a 2x4 stud wall?
Yes. At 2-3/4 inches deep it sits inside the 3-1/2 inch cavity of a nominal 2x4 wall with room behind for the cable. Where the cavity is shallower, such as a furred-out wall or a 2x2 partition, the depth will not clear and you want a shallower box instead, like the RACO 518S at 2-1/2 inches deep.
7) Am I buying one CWN-25 box or a carton of 25?
The CWN-25 is sold each, with 25 boxes to the outer carton. For a crew stocking a truck or a maintenance shop restocking a parts bin, the carton is a convenient unit; the boxes run about 62.5 lbs per 100, so a 25-pack is light to carry.
8) What should I use instead of the CWN-25 for a steel stud wall?
The CWN-25 is an old work steel box with non-metallic cable clamps, aimed at retrofit into finished wood framed walls. For steel studs, the Cantex EZ20SB EZ Box is a 1-gang non-metallic box made specifically for steel stud mounting.
9) I need a non-conductive box for a damp or corrosive location - what is the alternative to the steel CWN-25?
The CWN-25 is steel with a galvanized finish. Where a non-metallic enclosure is preferred, the Allied Moulded 2302-NKV is a fiberglass reinforced switch box and the Cantex EZ20SB is a non-metallic box; the Allied Moulded P-181 FlexBox is thermoplastic. Note the 2302-NKV is 2-gang, so for a single device the EZ20SB or P-181 are the 1-gang non-metallic options.
10) Can I use the Thomas & Betts CWN-25 in a steel stud wall, or is there a better box for that?
The CWN-25 is a welded galvanized steel old-work box with non-metallic cable clamps, intended for non-metallic sheathed cable in existing wall openings. For a steel stud application where the box mounts to the stud itself, the Cantex EZ20SB EZ Box is a 1-gang non-metallic box built specifically as a steel stud box. Choose by how the box is being held: the CWN-25 for retrofitting into a finished wall, the EZ20SB where you are fastening to steel framing.
11) How does the RACO 518S compare with the Thomas & Betts CWN-25 for depth and cable termination?
The CWN-25 is 2-3/4 in. deep with a non-metallic (C-5) cable clamp and two bottom cable knockouts. The RACO 518S is a gangable switch box 2-1/2 in. deep with a STAB-IT connector, so it is a quarter inch shallower and terminates the cable through the connector rather than under a clamp. Pick the 518S where stud or wall cavity depth is tight; pick the CWN-25 where you want the deeper welded body and clamp-style NM termination.
12) Is the Thomas & Betts CWN-25 RoHS compliant? We have a sustainable sourcing requirement.
No. The CWN-25 is not RoHS compliant. If RoHS status drives your spec, that is worth settling before you standardize on it across a facility.
13) Will a standard switch or receptacle plate cover the CWN-25 box opening?
Yes. At 3 x 2 inches at the face it takes standard single-gang device plates and standard single-gang toggle switches or duplex receptacles, which is the common single-gang format in North America.
