Thomas & Betts LCV-25 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the LCV-25 switch box have built-in clamps for Romex, or do I need to add connectors?
Clamps are built in. The LCV-25 comes with non-metallic (C-1) cable clamps and is intended for use with non-metallic sheathed cable, so you land NM cable directly in the box with no separate connectors. There are two cable knockouts in the bottom for that cable, plus one 1/2 inch conduit knockout in the bottom and one 1/2 inch at each end if you need to pick up EMT.
2) What is the CV bracket on the LCV-25 switch box for, and how does it mount to a stud?
The LCV-25 carries a CV bracket, so the box nails to the face of the stud during new construction rough-in rather than needing separate box supports. The welded steel body means the box will not come apart under hammering or when you pull cable through it. For old work in an existing finished wall, a bracket box is the wrong choice; use a gangable old-work box such as the RACO 517 TIGER GRIP instead.
3) Can I gang two LCV-25 boxes together for a two-gang switch?
No. The LCV-25 is a welded box, so the sides are fixed and it cannot be ganged. For a multi-gang opening you need either a gangable box with removable sides, like the Steel City Adjust-A-Box LXWOWC-25 or the RACO 518S, or a factory two-gang box such as the Allied Moulded 2302-NKV fiberglass 2-gang.
4) What is the closest steel alternative to the Thomas & Betts LCV-25 switch box if I need a gangable box?
The LCV-25 is a welded steel switch box, so it cannot be ganged with another box. If you need a gangable single-gang steel box, the Steel City LXWOWC-25 Adjust-A-Box is a 1-gang gangable switch box in pre-galvanized steel, and the RACO 518S is a gangable switch box 2-1/2 inches deep. The LCV-25 trades gangability for a one-piece welded body and a CV bracket for fastening to wood studs.
5) I am adding a switch to an existing finished wall - is the LCV-25 the right box?
No. The LCV-25 carries a CV mounting bracket, which is intended for new work where the stud is exposed before drywall goes up. For a cut-in on an existing finished wall, the RACO 517 TIGER GRIP gangable steel switch box is built for old work and mounts to the wall surface rather than a stud.
6) We are framing with steel studs - can I use the Thomas & Betts LCV-25?
The LCV-25's CV bracket is a wood-stud style nail-on bracket, so it is not the right choice for metal framing. The Cantex EZ20SB EZ Box is a 1-gang non-metallic box made specifically for steel stud construction.
7) Is the LCV-25 switch box UL listed, and is it RoHS compliant?
UL is the certification carried on this switch box. On RoHS, the LCV-25 is not RoHS compliant, which matters if you are buying against a green building or sustainable procurement spec. A non-metallic box such as the Cantex EZ20SB or the Allied Moulded P-181 FlexBox is a different material route if the spec pushes you away from galvanized steel.
8) Will the LCV-25 fit a standard 2x4 stud wall at 2-1/4 inches deep?
Yes. At 2-1/4 inches deep the box sits well inside the 3-1/2 inch depth of a nominal 2x4 stud, leaving room behind for cable. The CV bracket sets the box face for the finished wall thickness when nailed to the stud. If you are working a steel stud wall instead, a box made for that framing, like the Cantex EZ20SB steel stud box, is the easier mount.
9) Is the Allied Moulded 2302-NKV a substitute for the Thomas & Betts LCV-25?
Not a direct one. The 2302-NKV is a fiberglass reinforced 2-gang switch box, while the LCV-25 is a single-device steel box 3 inches long by 2 inches wide. If the opening takes two devices, the 2302-NKV covers it; for one device in a steel box with a C-1 non-metallic cable clamp, the LCV-25 is the match.
10) Does the RACO 518S go deeper than the Thomas & Betts LCV-25?
Yes. The LCV-25 is 2-1/4 inches deep, and the RACO 518S gangable switch box is 2-1/2 inches deep. The quarter inch matters when the stud bay is shallow or when a dimmer with a large body has to seat behind the plate.
11) Will a galvanized steel switch box like the LCV-25 hold up in a damp or unheated area?
The body is steel with a galvanized finish, which is the standard protection for dry and ordinary indoor locations and resists surface rust during construction exposure. It is not a weatherproof or wet-location enclosure. For corrosive or consistently damp service, a non-metallic box such as the Allied Moulded 2302-NKV fiberglass box is the material to look at instead.
12) We need a RoHS compliant switch box for a facility spec - is the LCV-25 it?
The LCV-25 is UL listed but is not RoHS compliant. If RoHS is a hard line in your specification, the non-metallic options are worth reviewing instead, such as the Allied Moulded P-181 FlexBox 1-gang thermoplastic box or the Cantex EZ20SB EZ Box non-metallic steel stud box.
