Thomas & Betts LXMOW-25 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Thomas & Betts LXMOW-25 switch box meant for new construction or old work retrofit?
The LXMOW-25 is an old work box, meaning it goes into an existing finished wall rather than being nailed to a stud before drywall. If you are roughing in a new wall, you want a new work bracketed box instead.
2) What cable does the LXMOW-25 box clamp accept?
It has built-in C-3 armored cable clamps, so it is set up for armored or metal clad cable (BX/MC). It is not a box for loose NM/Romex clamping, and there is no separate connector needed for the armored runs.
3) How many conductors will a 10.5 cubic inch switch box hold?
The LXMOW-25 gives you 10.5 cubic inches of volume in a 3 x 2 x 2 inch steel box. That is a single-gang box sized for a switch or receptacle with a modest conductor count, so on a deep multi-wire circuit or a box with several cables landing in it you will want to step up to a deeper box.
4) Will a 2 inch deep switch box fit in a standard 2x4 stud wall with drywall?
Yes. At 2 inches deep the LXMOW-25 sits well within the 3-1/2 inch depth of a 2x4 wall, which is why it works as a cut-in box behind 1/2 inch drywall. Check for insulation or blocking in the bay before you cut.
5) How many knockouts does the LXMOW-25 have and where are they?
There are 2 cable knockouts in the bottom, 2 cable knockouts at each end, and one 1/2 inch conduit knockout in the bottom. That bottom 1/2 inch KO is the one to use if you are transitioning to EMT or flex rather than armored cable.
6) Is the LXMOW-25 box a one-piece welded body, and is it UL listed?
Welded steel construction with a galvanized finish, and it carries a UL listing. Welded corners matter on an old work box because there are no seams to spring open when you tighten the box into the drywall.
7) Is the LXMOW-25 sold individually or by the box of 25?
It is sold each, and the standard outer carton is 25 boxes. Handy number to know if you are stocking a truck or buying for a multi-unit rewire.
8) Is the Thomas & Betts LXMOW-25 RoHS compliant?
No. The LXMOW-25 galvanized steel switch box is not RoHS compliant, which matters if your spec or facility procurement requires RoHS on all supplied materials.
