Thomas & Betts SWB-25 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Thomas & Betts SWB-25 switch box for old work or new construction?
The SWB-25 is an old work box, meant to go into an existing finished wall rather than being nailed to a stud ahead of drywall. If you're roughing in new construction, you want a new work box with a bracket or nails instead.
2) How many wires can I legally put in a 7.5 cubic inch switch box?
The SWB-25 has 7.5 cubic inches of volume, which is the number you use for NEC box fill math. Every 14 AWG conductor counts 2 cubic inches and every 12 AWG counts 2.25, so in practice this box handles a single switch on a 14 AWG circuit with limited conductors. For a device with multiple cables landing on it, step up to a deeper or larger box.
3) Will the SWB-25 work with Romex, or do I need a metal-clad cable box?
Built for non-metallic sheathed cable. It comes with non-metallic (C-5) clamps inside, so NM cable lands directly in the box with no separate connector. For MC or BX you would need a box with metal cable clamps or a listed MC connector and a knockout box.
4) What are the actual dimensions of the Thomas & Betts SWB-25 switch box?
It measures 3 inches long by 2 inches wide with a 1-1/2 inch depth. That 1-1/2 inch depth is the one to check against your wall cavity, since a shallow box matters most where you're cutting into plaster or have insulation or blocking behind the drywall.
5) How many cable knockouts does the SWB-25 have and where are they?
Two cable knockouts in the bottom and two at each end. That gives you room to bring a feed in and a switch leg or travelers out without crowding, which is the usual old work situation where you're fishing from more than one direction.
6) Is the SWB-25 box steel or plastic, and will it hold up in a damp basement?
Steel with a galvanized finish, and welded rather than crimped at the corners. The galvanizing gives it better corrosion resistance than bare steel for basements and garages, and the welded construction keeps the box square when you're torquing a device into it.
7) Is the Thomas & Betts SWB-25 UL listed?
Yes, the SWB-25 carries UL certification. It is not RoHS compliant, which matters only if your spec or purchasing policy requires RoHS on electrical components.
8) Can I gang two SWB-25 boxes together for a two-switch plate?
No. The SWB-25 is a welded box, so the sides do not come off the way a sectional gangable box does. For a two-gang opening you need a gangable sectional box or a one-piece two-gang box.
9) Are SWB-25 switch boxes sold individually or by the case?
Sold each, with 25 boxes to the outer carton. Bulk weight runs 41 lbs per 100 boxes, useful if you're estimating freight on a multi-case order for a full building rough-in.
