No handing to specify. The DC1636 is non-handed, so a single unit works on a left hand or right hand opening and you can stock one closer for the whole building instead of splitting inventory. Tri-mount also means the same body covers regular arm (pull side), top jamb, and parallel arm mounting.

Spring power adjusts through sizes 3 to 6 on the DC1636, which is the range that covers medium interior doors up through wide and heavy exterior entrances. You set the power at install rather than ordering a fixed size, so one closer can be dialed down for a light office door or up for a heavy exterior door that fights wind load. A surface applied closer like the DC1636 mounts to the door face and frame with no prep in the door or the header, so it retrofits an existing opening and every hydraulic adjustment stays reachable with the cover off. A concealed closer hides in the door or the frame head and looks cleaner, but it needs the door or header machined for it, which usually means new doors or new frames. For replacing a failed closer on an existing building, surface applied is the practical choice.
