Thomas & Betts 2272 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What cord diameter range do the Thomas & Betts 2272 and 2273 90 degree cord connectors accept?
Two cord ranges cover .375 to .625 inch overall cord OD. The 2272 takes .375 to .500 inch cord, and the 2273 picks up from .500 to .625 inch. Measure the jacket OD of the SO or SJO cord you are terminating, not the conductor size, and pick the range it falls inside. If your cord measures right at .500 either one will grip it.
2) What hub size do these 90 degree liquid-tight cord connectors thread into?
The hub is 3/4 inch, so it threads into a 3/4 inch knockout or a 3/4 inch tapped boss on a box, fitting, or enclosure. Both the 2272 and 2273 share the same 3/4 inch hub; only the cord grip range changes between them.
3) Will a liquid-tight cord connector seal a wet or washdown location?
The 2272 and 2273 are liquid-tight cord connectors, so the grip compresses a sealing element around the cord jacket to keep liquid out of the enclosure where the cord enters. The seal only works if the cord OD sits inside the connector's range, .375 to .500 for the 2272 or .500 to .625 for the 2273. An oversize or undersize cord will not seal even if the grip tightens down on it.
4) Why use a 90 degree cord connector instead of a straight one?
A 90 degree body turns the cord immediately as it leaves the box, so the cord runs flat down a wall or along a machine frame instead of standing proud of the enclosure. Use it where there is no room for the bend radius of a straight connector, or where you want the cord drop pointed away from the fitting. If you have clearance and want the shortest path out of the box, a straight liquid-tight cord connector is the simpler choice.
5) Is this cord connector metal or plastic?
Malleable iron body with a metallic finish, not nylon or plastic. That matters on machine tool and industrial installs where the fitting can take a knock, and it means the fitting is a metallic one for grounding continuity purposes through the raceway system.
6) I have a 1/2 inch knockout, can I still use the 2272 cord connector?
Not directly. The 2272 and 2273 are built with a 3/4 inch hub, so a 1/2 inch knockout needs to be enlarged to 3/4 inch or the connector mounted through a reducing washer arrangement is not an option in reverse. Either step the knockout up to 3/4 inch or order a 1/2 inch hub cord connector in the same cord range instead.
