Thomas & Betts 2284 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What hub size do these 90 degree liquid-tight cord grips thread into?
All three are 2 inch trade size, so they land in a 2 inch threaded hub, box knockout or enclosure opening. The 2 inch size is fixed across the family; only the cord range changes between the 2284, 2285 and 2286.
2) Will a strain relief cord connector work on liquidtight flexible conduit?
No. The 2284 family is a strain relief cord grip, built to clamp and seal around a round cable or portable cord jacket between 1.125 and 1.875 inches depending on part number. Liquidtight flexible metal or nonmetallic conduit needs a liquidtight conduit connector, which bites the convolutions of the conduit rather than gripping a smooth jacket. Ordering this one for conduit gets you a fitting that will not retain it.
3) Why choose a 90 degree cord connector instead of a straight one?
The right angle body turns the cord immediately at the enclosure, which is what you want when clearance behind or beside the box is tight, or when the cord needs to run flat down a wall or machine frame without a wide sweeping bend. A straight connector needs several inches of room in line with the hub plus bend radius beyond it. If you have that room, straight is simpler; if you do not, the 90 degree version buys back the space.
4) Is this cord grip metal or plastic, and will it hold up in a wet industrial area?
The body is malleable iron with a metallic finish, not nylon or plastic. That is the heavier-duty option for machine shops, pump rooms, wash-down areas and outdoor equipment where a plastic grip can crack or get knocked off. It is a liquid-tight design, so the sealing gland closes around the cord jacket at the entry point.
5) Can I standardize on one of these across a facility with mixed cord sizes?
Only within a narrow band. Each of the three parts covers a quarter-inch window, so a plant running a mix of cord sizes into 2 inch hubs generally stocks all three: 2284, 2285 and 2286. They share the same 2 inch trade size and the same malleable iron body, so the only variable your crew has to get right at the point of install is the cord diameter.
