Thomas & Betts RD8-10 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Thomas & Betts RD series ring terminal take?
The RD8 ring terminal is built for 8 AWG copper conductor. The red nylon insulation sleeve accepts wire insulation up to 0.34 inches outside diameter, so heavier-jacketed 8 AWG building wire still seats in the funneled barrel entry.
2) Which stud sizes are available on the Thomas & Betts RD8 ring terminal?
Three stud sizes: #10 (RD8-10), 1/4 inch (RD8-14), and 3/8 inch (RD8-38). Pick the ring to match the bolt or stud on the lug pad, breaker terminal, or ground bar you are landing on, not the wire.
3) What crimp tool do I need for a T&B RD8 ring terminal?
Thomas & Betts calls out the ERG4007 tool for the RD8. An 8 AWG insulated nylon barrel needs a full-cycle crimper sized for that die; pliers or a light automotive crimper will not compress the barrel onto the deep internal serrations properly.
4) Is the RD8 ring terminal UL listed and what is its voltage rating?
Carries both UL and CSA, rated 600V, with a 105 degrees C temperature rating and a UL 94 V-2 flammability rating on the insulation. That combination covers typical 600V panelboard, control, and motor-connection work.
5) Is the Burndy YAV6CL1BOX Hylug ring terminal an equivalent to the Thomas & Betts RD8 ring terminal?
They are not interchangeable by wire size. The Thomas & Betts RD8 ring terminal is built for 8 AWG conductor, while the Burndy YAV6CL1BOX Hylug is a one-hole ring terminal for 6 AWG with a #8-10 stud hole. If the conductor landing on the stud is 8 AWG, the RD8 is the one sized to it; the Burndy part is sized for the next larger conductor. The RD8 is offered with #10, 1/4 inch, and 3/8 inch stud holes, so match the stud diameter at the terminal block or bus as well as the wire size.
6) Can I buy T&B RD8 ring terminals individually or only by the box?
Unit of measure is each, but orders go in multiples of 25. Inner pack is 25 pieces and the outer carton holds 250, so an MRO crib standardizing on 8 AWG rings can stock in 25s without taking a full carton.
7) Are these ring terminals copper or aluminum, and will they corrode in a damp mechanical room?
The barrel and tongue are copper with an electro tin-plated finish. Tin plating over copper resists oxidation at the contact face and is the standard choice for copper conductor; it is not rated for aluminum conductor, so do not use the RD8 on 8 AWG aluminum.
8) What is the difference between the T&B RD8 and a Burndy Hylug ring terminal?
The RD8 is an insulated nylon ring terminal for 8 AWG, color coded red, in #10, 1/4 inch, and 3/8 inch studs. The Burndy YAV6CL1BOX Hylug is a 6 AWG one-hole ring terminal with a #8-10 stud hole, so it is the choice when the conductor is 6 AWG rather than 8 and the stud is no larger than #10.
9) I need an insulated ring terminal for 8 AWG - how does the RD8 differ from a Burndy Hylug?
The Thomas & Betts RD8 is an insulated nylon ring terminal, red, on electro tin-plated copper, rated 600V and 105 degrees C, and it accepts insulation up to 0.34 inch outside diameter. The Burndy YAV6CL1BOX is from the Hylug series and is specified for 6 AWG with a #8-10 stud. For an 8 AWG conductor where you want the insulated barrel and a nylon sleeve over the crimp, the RD8 is the part sized for that conductor, and it crimps with the ERG4007 tool.
10) How thick is the tongue on the RD8 ring terminal, and will it stack under a breaker lug?
Stock thickness is 0.04 inches. That is thin enough to land under a bolted lug pad or on a ground bar without eating up much space, and the tongue is one-hole, so it takes a single stud per terminal.
11) Do T&B RD8 ring terminals come on a tape reel for automated machines?
No. The RD series 8 AWG ring terminal is not offered on Mylar tape, so it is a loose-piece, hand-crimped terminal only.
