Thomas & Betts 4250 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What trade sizes does the Thomas & Betts 90 degree short elbow come in?
Four trade sizes: 1/2 inch (part 4250), 3/4 inch (4251), 1 inch (4252), and 1-1/4 inch (4253). Order by the conduit trade size you are running, not by the outside diameter of the pipe.
2) Can I use this 90 degree elbow on rigid conduit, or is it IMC only?
It is a rigid/IMC fitting. Rigid metal conduit and intermediate metal conduit share the same NPT thread specification in a given trade size, so a threaded elbow made for IMC takes RMC threads as well. Both are threaded male on each end and couple to your run with standard conduit couplings.
3) What is the difference between a short elbow and a standard 90 degree conduit elbow?
A short elbow turns the run in a tighter radius than a standard factory 90. That is what you want when you are coming out of a box or panel with limited clearance, or turning down a wall against a structural member. On larger conductors where bend radius matters for pulling, a standard radius 90 is the better choice. The Thomas & Betts 4250 series is the short pattern.
4) Is this conduit elbow malleable iron or die cast zinc?
Malleable iron. That matters on commercial and industrial jobs where the fitting takes mechanical load or impact, and it is what most specs calling out threaded rigid/IMC fittings expect over die cast.
5) Do I need a coupling to install this elbow, or does it thread straight into my conduit?
You need couplings. A threaded elbow has male threads on both ends, the same as the ends of a stick of IMC or rigid, so joining it to conduit takes a standard threaded coupling at each end. None are supplied with the elbow, so count two per elbow when you take off the job.
6) I am standardizing conduit fittings across a facility, can I order one part number for all my runs?
No single number covers it. Each trade size is a separate part: 4250 for 1/2 inch, 4251 for 3/4 inch, 4252 for 1 inch, 4253 for 1-1/4 inch. All four are the same malleable iron short elbow pattern, so you can standardize on the series and stock the sizes your runs actually use.
