Thomas & Betts 4240 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will this Thomas & Betts short radius elbow work on EMT, or is it for rigid conduit?
The 4240 series insulated 90 degree short elbow is built for EMT (electrical metallic tubing) and sized to standard EMT trade sizes. Thread-on rigid and IMC elbows are a different animal, so if you are turning threaded rigid conduit you want a threaded elbow or a conduit body instead.
2) Why choose an insulated elbow instead of a plain one for a conduit turn?
The insulated throat protects conductor insulation where the wire bends hardest, which is at the 90. On a turn that tight, ordinary metal edges are where jacket damage happens during a pull. The 4240 series carries that insulation as part of the fitting, so no separate bushing is needed at the elbow.
3) What is the difference between a short radius and a standard radius 90 degree conduit elbow?
A short radius 90 turns the run in less space, which is what you want tight to a wall, in a shallow ceiling cavity, or coming off a panel with little room. The trade-off is a tighter bend for the conductors, so for large or stiff cable a longer sweep pulls easier. The 4240 series is the compact short elbow.
4) Is the Thomas & Betts 4240 elbow strong enough for industrial and exposed conduit runs?
It is malleable iron, not die-cast zinc or steel stamping, so it takes mechanical abuse better than lighter fittings. That is the reason it shows up in industrial conduit systems and commercial work as well as light residential runs.
5) I need to standardize the same 90 degree EMT elbow across several buildings. Can I order matching fittings in more than one size?
Yes. The same insulated short radius elbow design runs across 1/2, 3/4, 1 and 2 inch, all malleable iron, so a facility can spec one fitting family and just order the trade size each run needs.
