Thomas & Betts T17SA – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does this Thomas & Betts T conduit body have threaded hubs or set-screw connections?
Threaded. The T7SA bodies take threaded rigid or IMC conduit directly into the hubs, so the conduit ends need to be cut and threaded to the trade size you order. They are not set-screw or compression bodies, so they will not accept bare EMT without a threaded adapter.
2) When should I use a Type T conduit body instead of an LB or LL?
A Type T gives you three in-line openings plus the back opening, so it is the one to use where a run has to branch, or where you need a pull point with a tee off it. An LB, LL or LR is a single 90 degree change of direction. If you only need to turn a corner or come out of a wall, use the ell; if you need to split the run or feed two directions from one point, the T is the body.
3) Is this conduit body OK for outdoor or damp locations?
The body is sand cast aluminum, which is the usual choice for exterior and damp industrial raceway because it does not rust like steel. Aluminum should be kept off direct contact with concrete, masonry and plaster, and away from chlorides or caustic washdown, where PVC-coated or malleable iron bodies hold up better.
4) Do I need to order a cover and gasket separately for the T7SA conduit body?
Yes. Covers and gaskets for these Thomas & Betts T bodies are separate line items and are not part of the body order. Match the cover to the same trade size as the body you buy (for example a 2 inch cover for the T67SA) and add a gasket if the location is wet or damp.
5) Can I mix an aluminum T body with steel rigid conduit?
Mechanically yes, the threads are standard, but aluminum against galvanized steel in a wet or corrosive location invites galvanic corrosion at the joint. For dry interior runs it is routine; outdoors or in washdown areas, stay with aluminum conduit and fittings throughout or use an anti-seize compound on the threads.
6) I am standardizing conduit bodies across a plant. Can one part number cover 1/2 inch through 3-1/2 inch runs?
No single number covers the range, but the T7SA family does, with the same sand cast aluminum body style in each size: T17SA, T47SA, T57SA, T67SA, T77SA, T87SA and T97SA for 1/2 through 3-1/2 inch. That keeps one material and one body style on the shelf across your sizes, which simplifies cover stocking too.
