Thomas & Betts TC711A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What EMT conduit sizes does the Thomas & Betts TC700 Series compression connector come in?
Three trade sizes: 1/2 inch (TC711A), 3/4 inch (TC712A), and 1 inch (TC713A). Each is sold individually, not in a bag or carton quantity, so order the count you need per size.
2) Does the TC712A EMT connector have an insulated throat for THHN pull-through?
Yes. The throat is insulated, so conductor insulation isn't dragged across a bare steel edge as you pull. That is what many specs mean by an insulated throat fitting, and it saves adding a separate bushing on the box side.
3) Will the TC711A connector thread into a standard knockout in a panel or junction box?
Yes. The 1/2 inch TC711A is a standard trade size EMT connector, and 1/2 inch trade size fittings land in the 1/2 inch knockouts punched in panels, gutters and steel boxes, secured with the supplied locknut on the inside. Same logic for the 3/4 inch TC712A and 1 inch TC713A in their matching knockouts. If you need to step up from a smaller knockout, use a reducing washer set rather than a larger connector.
4) Will this fitting work on rigid conduit or flexible metal conduit instead of EMT?
No. It's an EMT conduit fitting, sized and gripped for the thin wall of electrical metallic tubing. Rigid and IMC use threaded couplings or rigid-specific compression fittings, and FMC or liquidtight flex needs its own connector style. Using an EMT compression connector on a different raceway type will fail inspection.
5) Is this a compression connector or a set screw connector for EMT?
It's a compression type. The gland nut squeezes a ring onto the tubing, which grips harder than a set screw fitting and keeps metal-to-metal continuity around the full circumference. Set screw connectors are quicker and cheaper for dry indoor runs; compression is what inspectors expect where the connection needs to resist pull-out and damp conditions. Note that compression EMT connectors are only raintight when the specific fitting is listed for it, so match the fitting to the environment your drawing calls for.
6) Is the Thomas & Betts TC700 EMT connector steel or die cast zinc?
Steel, with a zinc plated finish. Steel body fittings are what most commercial and institutional specs require over die cast; the zinc plating handles general corrosion exposure. For continuously wet or corrosive areas, a specifier will usually move you to a different material entirely rather than plated steel.
7) Can I use these connectors to repair an existing EMT run, or only new rough-in?
Both. Compression connectors work for maintenance and repair on existing electrical metallic tubing as well as new construction rough-in, since the fitting clamps onto cut tubing without needing threads on the conduit. Cut the EMT square and deburr the end before sliding the gland on, or the insulated throat and the compression ring won't seat properly.
