Thomas & Betts 5323 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What trade sizes does the Thomas & Betts EMT insulated compression connector come in?
Three sizes: 1 inch (part 5323), 1-1/2 inch (5523), and 2 inch (5623). Order by the EMT trade size you are terminating, not by the conduit OD.
2) Is this an insulated throat connector? Do I still need a bushing?
These are insulated connectors, so the throat already carries a plastic liner to protect conductor insulation as wire is pulled through. No separate plastic bushing is needed at the box.
3) Will a 2 inch EMT compression connector fit a standard 2 inch knockout?
Yes. The 5623 is a 2 inch trade size connector, and conduit fitting trade sizes match the knockout sizes punched in boxes and enclosures, so a 2 inch connector lands in a 2 inch knockout and is secured with the supplied locknut. Same logic for the 1 inch (5323) and 1-1/2 inch (5523).
4) Can I use these to terminate rigid conduit or IMC?
No. This is an EMT fitting, which compresses onto unthreaded thin-wall tubing. Rigid metal conduit and IMC are threaded and get a threaded coupling, bushing or a dedicated rigid-to-box connector instead.
5) Are these EMT connectors steel or die-cast zinc?
Steel. That matters on commercial and institutional jobs where specs call out steel EMT fittings rather than die-cast, and it is the more impact-tolerant choice for exposed runs in mechanical rooms and parking structures.
6) What is included with a T&B 5323 compression connector, and what do I supply?
Each connector is a complete fitting: body with insulated throat, compression gland ring and compression nut, plus the locknut for the box side. You supply the EMT and the box or enclosure. No set screw, no separate bushing.
7) Do I need to ream or prep the EMT before installing a compression connector?
Cut the tube square and ream the inside edge first. The connector's insulated throat protects the conductors at the fitting, but a burr left in the EMT itself will still cut insulation during the pull. Slide the tube fully into the body until it bottoms, then tighten the compression nut.
