Thomas & Betts 5123 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will this EMT connector work on rigid conduit or flexible metal conduit?
No. It is built for electrical metallic tubing only. Rigid and IMC are threaded and need a threaded coupling or fitting, and flex needs a squeeze or screw-in flex connector. Using an EMT compression fitting on either one will not give you a proper mechanical or grounding connection.
2) Can I use a compression EMT connector instead of a set screw connector in a wet or outdoor location?
Compression is the style to use where a set screw connector will not hold up. The 5000 Series connector tightens a steel compression ring around the tubing rather than pinching it with a screw, which gives a mechanically tight joint that resists loosening from vibration. Set screw fittings are the cheaper indoor choice; compression is what gets specified where the connection has to stay tight. For a specific wet location listing, go by the markings on the fitting and your inspector's requirement.
3) What does the insulated throat on this EMT connector actually do for me?
The insulated throat puts a non-metallic liner at the point where conductors leave the fitting and enter the box, so THHN insulation is not dragged across a steel edge when you pull. That is why insulated-throat fittings get specified on feeders and larger conductor pulls, and it saves you from adding a separate bushing.
4) Is this connector steel or die cast zinc?
Steel. The 5000 Series EMT compression connector is a steel-bodied fitting, which is what a lot of commercial and institutional specs call for when die cast zinc is excluded. Steel also takes rough handling on a job site better than cast.
5) Do I need a locknut with this compression connector, or is it included?
A compression connector of this type carries its own threaded hub and locknut to secure it to the box knockout, and the compression nut goes on the conduit side. Plan on nothing else for the box side; what you do need to confirm is that the knockout matches the trade size you ordered, 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch.
6) Can I standardize on one EMT connector across a multi-tenant building's branch circuits and feeders?
For a building running mostly 1/2 and 3/4 inch EMT, these two sizes cover the bulk of branch circuit and small feeder terminations, and both are the same steel insulated compression design so the install method is identical for your crews. Larger feeder runs will need bigger trade sizes in the same style.
