1) Is stainless threaded rod worth it over plain or galvanized rod for hanging conduit?
Stainless is what you reach for where plain or electro-galvanized rod would corrode: wash-down areas, food processing, pool and natatorium spaces, coastal or exterior exposure, and chemical rooms. For dry interior conduit and strut hanging, plain zinc rod does the same mechanical job. The Metallics 3/8-16 x 6 foot rod is stainless, so it is the choice for the corrosive or damp runs rather than the general-purpose interior ones.
2) Can I cut this 6 foot threaded rod down to shorter drops?
Yes. The rod is continuously threaded over its full 6 foot length, so it can be cut anywhere into whatever drop lengths the job needs and the cut ends still take a nut. Chase or file the cut end before threading a nut on. Bear in mind stainless galls, so use a lubricant when cutting and when running nuts on.
3) Will 3/8-16 rod fit standard conduit hangers and strut nuts?
3/8-16 is the common trade size for electrical and mechanical hanging hardware, so it mates with 3/8 inch strut channel nuts, split-ring and clevis hangers, beam clamps and rod couplings specified for 3/8 inch rod. Pair stainless rod with stainless or compatible-metal nuts and clamps where the whole assembly is exposed to the same corrosive conditions.
