1) I ordered TRS8/6A before - is TRS8/6D the same rod?
Same rod, new number. TRS8/6A was the old Metallics part number and TRS8/6D supersedes it. Still 3/8-16 x 6 feet in zinc plated steel.
2) Is zinc plated threaded rod okay for hanging conduit and pipe outdoors or in a wet area?
Zinc plating on the TRS8/6D is a light corrosion coating meant for dry interior work, hanging conduit, strut, cable tray, ductwork and pipe inside a conditioned or covered building. For exterior exposure, wash-down areas, pools or coastal sites, go to a stainless or hot dip galvanized rod of the same 3/8-16 thread instead.
3) Can I cut a 6 foot threaded rod down to the drop lengths I need?
Yes. A 6 foot continuous threaded rod is bought to be cut on site, so one stick covers several hanger drops. Cut with a bandsaw, portaband or rod cutter and chase the cut end with a nut or a 3/8-16 die so the threads start clean.
4) What hardware do I need to order with 3/8-16 threaded rod for a conduit hanger job?
The rod ships bare, no nuts or hangers included. Plan on 3/8-16 hex nuts and washers, plus whatever anchors into the structure, a 3/8 inch concrete anchor or wedge insert, beam clamp, or ceiling flange. Downstream you need 3/8-16 strut nuts, clevis hangers, or conduit/pipe clamps sized to the run.
5) Is this the right diameter rod, or should I step up to 1/2 inch?
3/8 inch rod is the common size for conduit racks, single pipe drops, light trapeze and most electrical hanging work. Step up to 1/2 inch or larger when the trapeze span is long, the load is heavy pipe full of water, or the engineer's drawing calls out a larger rod diameter. The TRS8/6D is the 3/8-16 size.
6) Is Metallics TRS8/6D threaded rod domestically made for a Buy American job?
Yes, the TRS8/6D is USA made, which is what matters on federally funded or Buy American specified work where the rod has to be domestic.
