Topaz Lighting 1081 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What sizes does the Topaz 1081 Schedule 40 PVC end cap come in?
Trade sizes run 1/2 inch through 6 inch. The individual part numbers are 1081 (1/2"), 1083 (1"), 1084 (1-1/4"), 1085 (1-1/2"), 1087 (2-1/2"), 1088 (3"), 1090 (4"), 1090A (5") and 1090B (6"). Order by the trade size of the conduit you are capping, not by the outside diameter of the pipe.
2) Will this end cap fit Schedule 80 PVC conduit or only Schedule 40?
It is built to Schedule 40 PVC conduit dimensions and slips over the outside of the pipe. Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 conduit of the same trade size share the same outside diameter, since Schedule 80 gains its extra strength from a thicker wall on the inside, so the socket engages either one. Match the trade size and you are fine.
3) Does the slip-fit connection mean I still have to glue the PVC end cap on?
The slip fit socket pushes straight onto a cut pipe end with no threading and no tools. Whether you solvent weld it is your call: leave it dry where the cap is temporary protection on a stub left for future expansion or service access, and cement it where the termination is permanent and needs to stay sealed against moisture and debris.
4) How many end caps come in a box from Topaz?
Standard pack is 100 pieces. That is the quantity contractors and MRO stockrooms typically buy for capping stubbed conduit across a jobsite or keeping a shelf stocked by trade size.
5) Can I use a PVC end cap outdoors or in a wet location?
The cap is solid PVC, which resists moisture, bacteria and general environmental exposure, and its purpose is to seal an open pipe end against ingress of water and debris. For a buried or exposed stub left for future work, that is the point of the part. For a watertight seal that will stay that way, solvent weld it rather than leaving it dry-fit.
6) I have a mix of 1/2 inch through 4 inch stubs on site. Can I standardize on one Topaz part number?
No, each trade size is its own part. Caps are size-specific because the socket has to match the pipe OD, so a 4 inch job needs 1090 and a 1/2 inch stub needs 1081. Buy by size in 100-piece packs across the sizes you actually run.
7) What is the difference between a PVC end cap and a PVC plug for closing a conduit?
An end cap like the Topaz 1081 slips over the outside of the pipe and closes the whole end, so it is what you want on a cut stub of Schedule 40 conduit. A plug goes inside the bore instead. For a stubbed run left for expansion, the cap is the usual choice because it also protects the pipe end itself and gives a finished look on exposed work.
