TOTO THP5255 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the TOTO THP5255 part used for?
The THP5255 is a TOTO diverter cartridge, the internal replacement cartridge inside a diverter valve body. Its job is to route water between outlets, for example from a tub spout to a showerhead. TOTO lists it for shower and tub applications. It is a repair part, not a complete valve or trim kit, so you reuse your existing valve body, handle and escutcheon.
2) My TOTO shower won't switch water from the spout to the showerhead. Is a cartridge like the THP5255 what I need?
If the handle turns but water keeps coming out of the wrong outlet, the diverter cartridge is the usual failure point, and the THP5255 is TOTO's diverter cartridge for shower and tub valves. Service work on a diverter normally means pulling the trim, backing the old cartridge out of the valve body and dropping the new one in, so no pipe work or wall opening is involved. Confirm the cartridge number stamped on or called out for your specific TOTO valve before ordering, since TOTO uses different cartridges across its valve families.
3) Will a TOTO diverter cartridge fit a Moen, Delta or Kohler shower valve?
No. The THP5255 is a TOTO service part and is dimensioned for TOTO valve bodies. Diverter cartridges are brand and family specific in their body length, seal spacing and stem engagement, so a TOTO cartridge will not seat or seal in another manufacturer's valve. Match the cartridge to the brand of valve already in the wall.
4) What part number do I give my supplier for the TOTO diverter cartridge?
Order it as TOTO THP5255. That is the manufacturer part number, and it is the only identifier a plumbing counter or purchasing system needs for this diverter cartridge.
5) Does the TOTO THP5255 come with a handle or trim plate?
No. The THP5255 is the diverter cartridge alone. Handles, escutcheons and the valve body are ordered separately, so if the trim on the wall is damaged or you are changing the look of the fixture, you need those parts in addition to the cartridge.
6) Is the THP5255 a thermostatic or pressure balance cartridge for controlling temperature?
Neither. It is a diverter cartridge, which only changes which outlet the water leaves through. Temperature control comes from the mixing valve cartridge, a separate part. If the complaint is scalding or temperature swing rather than water coming out of the wrong outlet, the diverter is not the part to replace.
7) I manage a hotel with TOTO shower valves. Is it worth stocking the THP5255 as an MRO spare?
Yes, for properties standardized on TOTO shower and tub valves that use this cartridge. Diverters are a wear item, and because the repair is a cartridge swap behind the trim rather than a valve replacement, keeping a few THP5255 cartridges on the shelf turns a room-out-of-service call into a short in-house fix. Verify the cartridge called out for the valve model on your openings so your spares match the fleet.
