TOTO THP5244#BN – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the TOTO THP5244#BN 2-way diverter cartridge used for?
It is a two-way diverter cartridge for TOTO thermostatic shower and tub valve trim, specifically the square thermostatic trim style. Its job is to send water to one of two outlets, for example a showerhead and a tub spout or handshower, from a single trim assembly.
2) Is THP5244#BN a complete shower valve or just a replacement part?
It is a replacement cartridge, not a valve body and not a full trim kit. You install it into an existing TOTO thermostatic valve setup, so the rough-in valve and the square trim plate and handles need to already be in place or ordered separately.
3) My TOTO thermostatic shower won't switch from the tub spout to the showerhead. Is the diverter cartridge the part to replace?
That symptom usually points at the diverter cartridge rather than the thermostatic element, since the diverter is what routes flow between the two outlets while the thermostatic cartridge handles temperature. THP5244#BN is the two-way diverter cartridge for TOTO square thermostatic trim. If the complaint is instead lukewarm or fluctuating water at both outlets, the thermostatic cartridge is the suspect part, not this one.
4) Will a 2-way diverter work if I have a showerhead, handshower and body sprays?
No. A two-way diverter switches between two outlets only. Three separate outlets need a three-way diverter or a dedicated volume control per outlet, so confirm the outlet count at the valve before ordering THP5244#BN.
5) Do I need to open the wall to replace a TOTO diverter cartridge?
Typically no. A diverter cartridge is serviced from the face of the valve: shut off the supplies, pull the handle and the square escutcheon, and the cartridge comes out through the trim opening. The valve body stays in the wall.
