TOTO THP5245#BN – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the TOTO THP5245#BN a complete shower valve, or just the trim?
It is trim only. The THP5245#BN is the square on/off thermostatic trim for a shower or tub application, so the thermostatic valve body has to be ordered separately. If you are roughing in a new wall, plan on the valve body plus this trim kit to finish the job.
2) What finish is TOTO THP5245#BN?
The #BN suffix on the part number is TOTO's brushed nickel finish, and that is the only finish this trim is built in. If the other fittings in the bath are polished chrome or matte black, you would need the matching suffix version of the same square trim instead.
3) Does this TOTO square trim control volume as well as temperature?
Yes, it is an on/off thermostatic trim, so one control shuts the water on and off and the thermostatic element holds the set temperature. It is not a diverter, so if you need to send water between a showerhead and a tub spout or a second outlet, that takes a separate diverter valve and trim.
4) Why specify a thermostatic trim instead of a pressure-balance trim in a rental or hotel bath?
A thermostatic valve holds the outlet temperature the user dialed in even when supply temperature shifts, where a pressure-balance valve only keeps the hot/cold ratio steady against pressure swings. In buildings where several fixtures draw at once, the thermostatic route gives fewer scald and cold-shock complaints. This TOTO trim is the thermostatic type, set up for shower and tub service.
5) Will the square TOTO trim match round TOTO shower fittings?
The THP5245 trim plate and handle are square, so it lines up with TOTO's square-escutcheon showerheads and spouts rather than round ones. For a bath being standardized across a property, pick the trim shape first and keep the whole opening in one geometry, since the plate is what the eye reads on the wall.
