Trimco TRI-1220-5.626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the Trimco 1220 and the 1221 kickdown holder?
Height and finishing method are what separate them. The 1220-5 is the 5 inch kickdown holder. The 1221 is the 4 inch, and it comes two ways: the 1221-4 is painted, the 1221-4FF is plated. So if you want a plated architectural finish on the short body, order the 1221-4FF, not the 1221-4. All three bodies are cast bronze, brass or aluminum.
2) Are Trimco kickdown holders ADA compliant?
Yes. The 1220 and 1221 kickdown holders are ADA compliant. They are operated with your foot rather than by grasping, pinching or twisting, which is the operable-parts issue ADA cares about on door hardware.
3) Which height kickdown holder do I need, the 4 inch or the 5 inch?
The 5 inch body is the 1220-5, the 4 inch is the 1221. The taller 5 inch gives you more drop, so it is the one to reach for when there is a bigger gap between the bottom of the door and the floor, over carpet, a mat, or an uneven slab. The 4 inch suits a tighter undercut on a hard floor. Both are the same cast bronze, brass or aluminum construction and both are offered in the full finish range.
4) Can I put a kickdown holder on a fire door?
No. A kickdown holder is a mechanical hold-open, and a fire rated opening has to be free to self-close and latch. Holding a fire door open on any mechanical device defeats the assembly. On a fire rated door you need an electromagnetic hold-open tied to the fire alarm, or a closer with integral hold-open listed for that use, so the door releases on alarm. The Trimco 1220 and 1221 kickdowns belong on non-rated commercial openings, corridors, storerooms, offices, retail and multifamily doors.
5) Should I use a kickdown holder or a wall stop with a hold-open on my commercial doors?
A kickdown holder mounts on the door itself and drops with your foot, so it holds the door open wherever the door happens to be standing, with no wall or floor hardware to install and nothing for the door to have to reach. That is why it works on openings where there is no wall behind the swing, or where the door needs to be parked at more than one angle. A wall stop with hold-open only holds at the one point the door contacts the wall. Trimco's 1220 and 1221 are hands-free: you kick it down and kick it up, no bending. They are built for commercial and industrial buildings, hospitality, multifamily, offices and retail.
6) I need to match the kickdown holders to the lever finish on the rest of my doors. What finishes does Trimco offer on the 1220 and 1221?
Eight finishes across the series: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, and 628 clear anodize. Every one of those eight is available on all three models, the 1220-5, the 1221-4 and the 1221-4FF, so you can standardize the finish across a building and still mix heights opening by opening.
7) Do I need to specify handing when I order a Trimco 1220 kickdown holder?
No handing to specify. The 1220 and 1221 kickdowns are ordered by model (1220-5, 1221-4 or 1221-4FF) and finish only, and nothing else. There is no left-hand or right-hand version and no reverse-bevel variant, so the same part goes on any door in the building.
8) Is a painted or a plated kickdown holder better for a high traffic entrance?
For an opening that gets kicked all day, go plated. Trimco offers both: the plated architectural finishes are the durable route on a busy entry because the finish is part of the metal rather than a coating over it, while painted is the economical choice on lower-traffic interior doors. On the 4 inch body that decision is the model number itself, 1221-4FF for plated and 1221-4 for painted. The 1220-5 at 5 inches is offered in the plated architectural finishes.
9) Will a Trimco kickdown holder work on an aluminum storefront door?
Yes, a kickdown holder is a surface-mounted device that fastens to the face of the door near the bottom, so it does not care about the door core the way a through-bolted stop does. It goes on hollow metal, wood or aluminum. For a storefront, the 628 clear anodize matches standard aluminum, and it is offered on all three models, the 1220-5, the 1221-4 painted and the 1221-4FF plated.
10) How many kickdown holders do I need for a pair of doors?
One per leaf. A kickdown holder mounts on the door and bears on the floor under that door, so each leaf you want to hold open needs its own. On a pair where only the active leaf is used day to day, one on the active leaf is usually enough. Order the same model and finish for both leaves so the pair matches, since the 1220-5, 1221-4 and 1221-4FF are each offered in all eight finishes.

Perfect replacement for the old ones we had. The holes fit perfectly but I do recommend measuring first.
